Crane begins work in the center of World Showcase Lagoon on EPCOT's new nighttime spectacular

Crane in the center of World Showcase for new firework show infrastructure
Posted: Wednesday May 31, 2023 11:00am ET by WDWMAGIC Staff

Work is picking up pace on EPCOT's next nighttime spectacular this week as work begins in the center of World Showcase lagoon.

The barges that were being staged near the China pavilion are now deployed out in the center of the lagoon, along with a crane.

We expect to see new pilings driven into the lagoon to support new firework barge platforms for the upcoming firework show.

EPCOT's 50th-anniversary show Harmonious closed earlier this year, and the new spectacular is expected to debut this fall. Disney has yet to offer many details, but we know the show will use much less hardware than Harmonious, and a mostly clear lagoon during the daytime should return.

Had the opportunity to (sorta) see Luminous for the first time last Friday 8/30. Wasn't able to go to Epcot during our quick 2-day WDW trip last weekend (we opted for MK & HS), but was able to watch it from the bridge between International Gateway and the Boardwalk on our arrival day on Friday. I had the soundtrack queued up on my phone, so was listening to it with my earbuds during the duration of the show. Majority of the extra pyro added back in June is mostly gone now. The last 20 secs of the show still has the extra shells, thankfully. Will be able to finally see the show actually inside the park when I'm back next month, so can't wait for that! But first thoughts are that I love the finale even more in-person, even from afar. The music, pyro, lights, lasers, etc. work together so beautifully. Video of the finale:

Enjoy the show I just want to say I'm Looking Forward to your "verdict or final analysis of it." 😉

The pyro design on that is rough IMO, nowhere near as effective as Eric Tucker's design for MK Wishes.

Any possible changes are a way off.

Well, your enjoyment of the show really depends on if you like the music and the music selection. If projections are the main problem for you than it won't be that bad.

It has neither humongous oil rigs nor projections on a castle never meant to be a projection surface. So it has that going for it right out of the backstage area. We shall see. Hopefully.

Yeah... You're not going to like Luminous then.

I keep seeing people want drones at Epcot. This would not work well. Drones work really well at DLP because there is a large optimal viewing direction towards the castle, with the drones behind it. Drones did okay at Disney Springs because generally you had an okay viewing angle from where they funneled the Guest, but if you were too close to edge by Drawn to Life, or over on the market place side you lose what the drones are doing. Epcot would not work because the Guest are in a theater in the round setting. Remember the issues with the central stargate of Harmonious? This would be similar with drones. Unless you only do basic geometric shapes, it’s not going to look right. The only other option would be to have the drones on the outside of the park with the fireworks in the lagoon. But this would require a whole heck of a lot of more additional drones to not just be random pixels. And you will still have the issue of a dead spot on the future world side am(assuming Disney won’t fly them over Guest). Or… they could actually use some of those drone puppets they got a patent on a while back. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/aug/28/disney-puppets-fireworks-drones-patent

Hummmmm I worry for you as Luminous is, IMO, sort of cut from the same cloth Harmonious and HEA. It doesn't have any type of screens or projections but aside from that, it's definitely a clip show.

The problem with Starlight is the already happened budget cuts to some pieces that probably shouldn't have been cut. On one hand, you think they'd learn. On the other hand, we have been starving for so long anything will be a hit.

Not just you! At least 50 others besides you and me! Wishes was the winner of the GNSOAT poll (Greatest Nighttime Spectacular of All-Time) I conducted, but it wasn't exactly scientific in its methodology.

HEA 2023 was the right decision!!!! Now, let's get Starlight done and Open!

I wouldn't have minded a couple more years of Wishes. If it meant MK replacing MSEP right away, then making HEA...... Then again, HEA May 2017 was Breathtaking!!!!!!
