New permit filed for Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser hotel

Construction at Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser came to a complete halt during the COVID-19 shutdown that took effect in mid-March 2020 but there are signs that the project will live on.

A new permit was filed today for "Project H -Installation of Show Set Elements" with an expiration of 1/29/2022. (Thanks to @danlb_2000 for spotting the permit).

Of course, this does not indicate imminent start of work, and it isn't clear on the timeline of when the permit was applied for.

The contractor is Themeworks, who has done previous work for Disney including Toy Story Mania.

Disney had previously announced Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser will open in 2021 following reservations beginning in 2020 - but that timeline has now very likely shifted as a result of COVID-19.

Shame because a Star Wars hotel would’ve worked with a different theme and a more normal execution.

You never know? Unless someone has concrete evidence the Starcruiser has been gutted, you never know. While, yes its currently office space, Josh was the one who was quoted, "something will happen" with the Starcruiser and now that he is boss, whatever might have been tying his hands is now gone?

Is this subforum going to be shelved? I remember when there was so much hype, but they gave us 1% wealth-admitted Disney Star Wars instead of 10% Star Wars.

There is this hotel in France (Station Cosmos) that has a very Star Wars influenced theme (though not officially Star Wars). Goes for around 300 euros a night per family with tickets to their complex included. I believe it could have been successful as a hotel only in a resort with Star Wars or multiple IPs, and the LARP component as a premium add-on.

I'm pretty sure the Imagineers of days past survived projects they worked on being killed. And there were alot of them, even well into development (Tony Baxter seemed to have the most)

You have to assume they are primarily using the support buildings adjacent to the main Starcruiser building? I wonder if this is going to be the DHS WDI field office for Monstropolis/RNRC to save them having to build demountables like they are at DAK and MK?

I bet the daily reminder that your project could die at any time really helps morale

It's openly discussed by cast members that it is now the home of Imagineering Central Florida.

"Disney has a history of abandoning things and letting them rot..." TAX WRITE OFF! (the same way when an apartment complex has an empty apartment, they get to write it off on their taxes)

They're not short of parking lot space.

The only chance they would ever have to turn this around would be to redesign it as an OT Mecca and market straight at gen X…which is where a lot of “Disney adults” lie. That’s it… They completely miscalculated why people go to Orlando: for all the stuff. To lock you in, charge you a fortune, and use pathetically bad source material was a doozy even by Disney hubris standards

It’s Disney, it’ll likely sit there completely untouched for decades. In 10 years an urban explorer will find their way in and be amazed that it looks the same as it did the day it closed, everything still intact, just covered in years of dust. Disney has a history of abandoning things and letting them rot until they find a way of monetizing the land again. (River Country, Discovery island, Life pavilion, etc).
