As part of today's JP Morgan Global Technology, Media & Communications Conference, Disney Parks Chairman Josh D'Amaro addressed the recent announcement that Disney will close the Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser later this year.

Josh said, "It didn't perform exactly like we wanted it to perform. Despite the fact it was a never before seen experience and raised the bar, we thought it was time to sunset this in September."

According to D'Amaro, Disney will accelerate depreciation on the Starcruiser hotel by $150 million in both Q3 and Q4 2023.

The final voyage for Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser will take place September 28-30, 2023, and has already sold out. Disney is contacting guests booked on the cancelled Starcruiser voyages and says it hopes to relocate Cast Members to other roles at Walt Disney World.

Carrying a lofty price tag of around $5200 for the two-day, two-night experience, Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser launched on March 1 2022. After stronger-than-expected initial sales, Starcruiser bookings quickly stalled, forcing Disney to look to save costs and boost reservations.

Most recently, Disney began canceling voyages in the summer that had very few bookings, moving guests to other dates with a 50% discount for the inconvenience. Disney also offered various discounts, including Annual Passholder and Disney Vacation Club deals.

I don’t think this hotel had a chance with the price and theme…i honestly wouldve preferred original trilogy characters if I’m gonna spend that type of money 🤔🤔

It worked this way in the 1990’s under Eisner…. Tough to be a Bug was written by Kevin Rafferty (WDI) while it was still being developed by Pixar so it could open with DAK the same year it was released.

Imagine having to pay taxes on the retail of that......

I was just watching Wheel of Fortune and they gave away a stay on the Star Cruiser as a prize. Admittedly this was probably filmed several months ago.

I assumed $5000 for 2 persons, two nights. So $2500 per night per room.

I’d say $$5500 is a good average per cabin

I feel like it is definitely that but not just the rooms... There would need to be a luxury wing to the hotel...an indoor Space Pool and recreation center. People need down time in Space too..It can't be about shooting lasers and light saber play the entire time..... The main lobby and atrium needed to be more beautiful, larger, loftier spaces to overcome the perpetual night that the guests find themselves in while in the hotel... If the back story is this was a grand cruising ship, then it should not look like a cargo ship...it should have luxe accommodations...it should be a WOW! the second the shuttle doors open... not ...Oh...ok..... Between the videos we saw of the final product and the reviews, we said no way... A large part of that was based on what we all saw...when the "set" for this Star Wars Hotel is that underwhelming, why would we pay those prices to stay in a windowless box?

Am I missing something with the $2500? Double occupancy for a room is closer to $5000. So you'd have $182M as your floor for revenue if 100% occupancy was met every voyage. You'd might get to $200M with other purchases onboard.

Please tell me that the Yuuzhan Vong sacked it, loaded it full of captured space-yuppies, and sent it crashing into a Star as a sacrifice to their pantheon of gods.

Because if there’s one thing that’s going to get me on a vacation, it’s knowing that my little boy can role play as a space nazi!

The ship actually gets destroyed shortly after the 275th Anniversary Voyage (the one the story is set in) in canon.

Is the ship shuttered after a bit over a year in canon too now?

The core issue as I see it is that they compromised on the hotel rooms. They decided everyone would be too busy LARPING and barely be in them. So made them too basic. Maybe there's a way with stripping back a lot of the role-play stuff it could work as a budget hotel.
