The Walt Disney Company Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger announced today that Moana 2, Disney Animation’s all-new feature-length sequel to 2016's Oscar-nominated film, will be released in theaters on November 27, 2024.

"Moana remains an incredibly popular franchise," said Iger. "And we can’t wait to give you more of Moana and Maui when Moana 2 comes to theaters this November."

Walt Disney Animation Studios' animated musical Moana 2 takes audiences on an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers.

After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.

Directed by Dave Derrick Jr. with music by Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy nominee Opetaia Foa’i, and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina, Moana 2 opens in theaters on November 27, 2024.

Disney waited long enough to confirm it, but at least one of the original leads is coming back for this sequel: https://gizmodo.com/disney-moana-2-star-auli-i-cravalho-confirms-return-1851292040

Sure, but that probably entails adding just a single song for Oscar consideration, not coming up with a whole new slate of them. He wasn't the composer of Moana. That was largely Mark Mancina who is back for this installment.

He's working on the live action remake, he would have worked on this if it had been planned as a theatrical film from the beginning.

I'm pretty sure that Lin-Manuel Miranda is busy working on his next stage production, a musical adaptation of The Warriors. I've never watched Bridgerton, but the unofficial musical is pretty hilarious. Give it a listen, if you haven't heard it before. Barlow & Bear is a pretty good get for this, I think. Bear is a 22-year old jazz pianist with impressive accolades, but has done stuff in different musical genres, too.

You’re proving the point that the demands aren’t actually being considered. Less production time is a very common way of lowering a budget and/or meeting a smaller budget. Not using big name talent was also part of having a lower budget.

Exactly my point, the poster was saying it was worrisome that they hadn’t lined up voice actors yet. They had voice actors likely lined up that already recorded their lines for when it was a D+ series. Now that it’s a feature release they are having the original actors when possible come into re-record the lines.

I don't think there is any way possible that they will release Moana 2 in the theaters without Dwayne Johnson and Aulii Cravalho. If it stayed on D+ then yes that would be fine but not as a theatrical release.

Or they are having the original actors come in to re-record the vocals of the actors they got when it was a D+ series.

Lowering a budget is one thing. Making it under a seemingly compressed timetable is another. If they are still lining up voice talent, that is worrisome, as that’s usually one of the first things produced before the animators get to working.

It's so odd that all these posters constantly demand Disney lower their film budgets but then get really upset when they lower a film's budget. Almost like they're insincere.

Perhaps my favorite piece of Star Wars media since the original trilogy

Because it’s so easy to tell sarcasm in a typed post. (This is sarcasm).
