The Walt Disney Company Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger announced today that Moana 2, Disney Animation’s all-new feature-length sequel to 2016's Oscar-nominated film, will be released in theaters on November 27, 2024.

"Moana remains an incredibly popular franchise," said Iger. "And we can’t wait to give you more of Moana and Maui when Moana 2 comes to theaters this November."

Walt Disney Animation Studios' animated musical Moana 2 takes audiences on an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers.

After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.

Directed by Dave Derrick Jr. with music by Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy nominee Opetaia Foa’i, and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina, Moana 2 opens in theaters on November 27, 2024.

Fantasia 2000 and 2011 Winnie the Pooh, too Don’t forget those two, dude.

I’m also of that rare ilk. Frozen 2 swung a bit too high and Moana 2 a bit too low… but I liked them both way more than the consensus would dictate on this forum. I think there’s some good groundwork laid for their future sequels and don’t think they are rushing out too many In those respective franchises. 7 and 8 years are full childhoods.

FWIW, although the first Moana certainly got more critical acclaim than the recent sequel, audience reaction seems to be just fine. As an example, the audience score on RT only dropped from 89% to 86% between the two. Likewise, Frozen II actually has a considerably higher score (85% vs 92%) than the first one -- I happen to agree with that one, too. I don't really get all of the displeasure focused on both sequels here on this forum, and it seems as though the public doesn't really agree with it either.

As of now, Frozen 2 and Moana 2 haven’t seemingly derailed their predecessors. They still are very strong on streaming. Though I agree, there always exists a real risk of brand damage. I think we’ve tended to see that most often in the TV realm.

True, to a point. WDAS has done precious few theatrically released sequels. Of those sequels, the only ones that seem to have been better recieved from a critical standpoint are Rescuers Down Under and Ralph Breaks the Internet (RT comparisons). While sequels may make more money, if the brand is diminished that causes problems long term for those properties.

But the banana had Moana 2 written on it with sharpie.

Yeesh... this was the equivalent of Disney taping a banana on the wall and people payong millions for it.

Whether the movie sucks or not (and it is pretty bad), it is the money that counts here.

That doesn't matter. This is all that matters -

Watched this on the plane yesterday, what a horrible mess of a film. I don't even know where to begin. Just horribly sloppy along the lines of Lightyear and Strange World. Bad music, messy story, no character development. Like Disney animation, a big mess.

Which one? There seems to be a few movie "experts" on here.

Or folding them into each other, as the acclaimed movie expert here kept advocating for last year. ;)
