Disney's Animal Kingdom has announced the arrival of a new addition to the Kilimanjaro Safaris family: a 312-pound bundle of joy named Corra.
This two-month-old African elephant calf made her first appearance on the savanna at Kilimanjaro Safaris today. Corra is not just any calf; she marks a significant milestone as the first second-generation elephant born in the park, with her mother, Nadirah, also having been born at Disney's Animal Kingdom.
Corra joins a herd that includes her aunts, Stella and Luna, and her grandmother, Donna. Her father, Mac, is also a resident of the park, adding to the family reunion on the savanna. Watch the video below to see more of Cora.
The journey to Corra's arrival was a meticulous two-year process sparked by the animal care team's observation of Nadirah's readiness for motherhood. After a hopeful introduction and a successful courtship with Mac, the park celebrated the conception of its first second-generation calf. Throughout Nadirah's pregnancy, she underwent regular ultrasounds, ensuring the health and well-being of both mother and calf despite the challenges of monitoring such a large fetus.
Nadirah's care was a priority, with the animal care team ensuring she received plenty of nutritious treats and was comfortable during her pregnancy. As the expected delivery date approached, the team closely monitored the final stages of her nearly 22-month pregnancy, keenly observing hormonal changes that indicated the imminent arrival of Corra.
Behind the scenes, a dedicated team of professionals worked tirelessly to ensure the successful birth of Corra, highlighting Disney's commitment to conservation and the care of endangered species. Through collaboration with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Species Survival Plan, Disney's Animal Kingdom plays a vital role in preserving various endangered species, from African elephants to Sumatran tigers and the elusive okapi.
