Disney's Animal Kingdom has welcomed a baby mandrill monkey to Kilimanjaro Safaris.
Saffron was born to her mother, Hazel, on July 24, 2023, weighing in at less than 3 pounds.
Dr. Mark Penning, Vice President, Animals, Science and Environment, Disney Parks said, "The bond between the two has been inseparable, and even Saffron's sister Ivy has yet to hold her. "
With only about 4,000 mandrills remaining in the wilds of Africa, this new addition is great news for this vulnerable species. Saffron's birth is an example of how Disney works with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Species Survival Plan to help ensure the responsible breeding of endangered species in managed care to create healthy and genetically diverse populations of animals for years to come.
