Tom Sawyer Island at Magic Kingdom is a large, self-guided play-and-exploration area set in the middle of the Rivers of America. Designed to evoke the world of Mark Twain’s stories, the island gives you a chance to wander, climb, explore, and get lost—at your own pace.

Getting There

  • Access is by log raft, piloted by a Cast Member.
  • The raft departs from the dock in Liberty Square and lands at Tom’s Landing on the island.
  • Wait times may vary depending on raft traffic and the number of visitors, especially during midday.

What You’ll Explore

Once ashore, you’re free to explore the island’s pathways, caves, bridges, and historic set pieces. There’s no ride or timed element—this is a walk-through experience that encourages curiosity.

  • Harper’s Mill: One of the first landmarks you’ll see, this rustic water mill features detailed theming and mechanical elements. The interior sometimes contains hidden nods to Disney animation.
  • Injun Joe’s Cave: A winding, dimly lit cave with narrow passages and sound effects. Kids often lead the way here—adults may need to stoop to fit in some sections.
  • Fort Langhorn: A multi-level log fort with lookout towers, narrow stairs, and interactive elements like a blacksmith’s shop, stables, and play cannons. It’s modeled after early American frontier outposts.
  • Barrel Bridge and Suspension Bridge: These two bridges connect different parts of the island and bounce and sway as you cross. They’re favorites for kids and anyone looking for a bit of balance-testing fun.
  • Old Scratch’s Mine: A twisting rock tunnel with lanterns, sound effects, and a cool temperature change as you descend. It’s another chance to feel like an explorer.
  • Paved and dirt trails: Some lead to quiet corners with benches or shaded picnic spots. Others wrap around the perimeter, offering views of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Liberty Belle Riverboat, and the Haunted Mansion from unique angles.
  • Woodland theming: The island features natural-looking landscaping, tall trees, rustic fences, and dusty trails to simulate a trip back in time to the 1800s.

Features and Amenities

  • Maps are posted around the island to help you navigate.
  • No strollers are allowed due to narrow paths and bridges.
  • Limited seating is scattered around for resting.
  • There are no food or drink locations on the island, and restrooms are limited.
  • Tom Sawyer Island closes before sunset, typically around dusk.

Overall Experience

Tom Sawyer Island offers a break from the crowds and lines of Magic Kingdom. It’s quiet, shaded, and low-tech, with an emphasis on open-ended exploration. The island hasn’t changed much since it opened with the park in 1973, and that’s part of its appeal—it’s one of the last parts of Magic Kingdom that feels completely unplugged. If you’re traveling with kids who like to climb and explore, or you’re looking for a peaceful place to sit and take in the scenery, it’s worth the raft ride over.
