Disney has a new leader at the top of its streaming business. Adam Smith has been named Chairman, Direct-to-Consumer, Disney Entertainment. The move was announced today by Dana Walden, President and Chief Creative Officer, The Walt Disney Company.
Disney also announced a second leadership change. Joe Earley will step into a newly created role: President, Disney Entertainment Television Franchise and Content Strategy.
As Chairman, Smith will run Disney's global entertainment SVOD business. That means he'll set strategy and drive development across the company's streaming platforms, advertising technology, and emerging technologies.
His expanded role puts him in charge of Disney+ and Hulu, covering product and engineering, advertising technology, programming strategy, viewer experience, partnerships, and data and analytics.
Walden praised Smith's track record building out the Disney+ product and technology teams. "Alan Bergman and I are pleased to recognize the tremendous impact he has had on our direct-to-consumer business since he joined Disney, and we are confident that he is the right leader to meet the critical moment we're in and take us to the next level," she said.
Smith said his focus going forward is turning Disney+ into a central hub for fans to access everything across the Disney ecosystem. "We've established real momentum, and our vision ahead is clear," Smith said. "I'm grateful for this team, energized by what's ahead, and excited for our next chapter."
Joe Earley's New Role
In his new position, Earley will lead strategic development for Disney Entertainment Television's franchises. He'll oversee content and production for international originals, along with labor relations and creative talent development.
Walden called Earley "a talented executive with a rare combination of business acumen and creative instincts," adding that she and Debra OConnell are looking forward to having him join the Disney Entertainment Television leadership team.
Background on Both Executives
Smith joined Disney in 2024 and has been central to reshaping the company's direct-to-consumer business. He most recently held the title of Co-President, Direct-to-Consumer and Chief Product & Technology Officer for Disney Entertainment and ESPN. Before Disney, he spent more than 20 years at Google and YouTube in various executive roles.
Earley joined Disney in 2019 to lead Disney+ marketing and operations ahead of the platform's 2019 launch. He was named President of Hulu in 2022 and most recently served as Co-President, Direct-to-Consumer and head of content strategy. Before Disney, he spent years at Fox in content, communications, marketing, and operations roles.
