Disneyland marked its 70th anniversary today, July 17, by celebrating the cast members who have shaped the guest experience since 1955. The milestone was recognized with a private early morning event inside Disneyland park.

The celebration began before park opening with a cast member-only gathering featuring live entertainment, special photo opportunities, including a 70th anniversary hot air balloon, and a flag-raising ceremony in Town Square led by veteran employees. The Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger and Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro joined cast members on Main Street, U.S.A. to speak about the park’s legacy before ringing the New York Stock Exchange opening bell from the park, surrounded by cast and characters.

“It was on this day in 1955 that Walt Disney opened the gates of Disneyland for the first time and introduced the world to this very special place,” Iger said. “70 years later, Disneyland remains one of Walt’s greatest achievements – a place where generations of people from all over the world have stepped through these gates and entered a world of joy and imagination.”

After addressing cast members and taking part in a large commemorative photo, Iger helped open the park to the day’s guests, greeting them alongside Disneyland Resort employees along Main Street.

What’s New for the 70th

The celebration extended into the day with new offerings and one-day-only giveaways for guests visiting on July 17. Those in the park today could pick up a commemorative anniversary button and guide map (while supplies lasted), and watch a special 70th anniversary cavalcade in the afternoon.

New permanent experiences also launched today:

  • “Walt Disney – A Magical Life”, a new attraction using historical audio and a first-ever Audio-Animatronics figure of Walt Disney.
  • Main Street Cinema updates, showcasing additional restored footage and new display,
  • A refreshed finale scene at “it’s a small world”, including a new verse written by the late Richard Sherman shortly before his passing.

I'm not surenif they're talking about the exhibition at the end of the Walt show, which is already existing concept art

For the 70th, there is a new Zootopia window, replacing Cinderella
Very interesting to hear Iger share that near 30 million guests walk through those gates every year… they don’t normally say specific numbers. He mentioned at the opening ceremony today, and in that GMA interview.

So does this mean the numbers we get from TEA/AECOM are that wildly off?!?

Anyone have a sense of these numbers Iger is saying? @wdwmagic @lentesta @DCBaker ?

Cute but replacing Cinderella? 🥴

Well at least this one works

I've followed "the numbers" for about 20 years as a coaster dork, and the consensus has always been that the real numbers are often wildly off from what is actually posted. The only Disney-related numbers that appear to be legitimate (or at least, are recognized as the most legitimate) are those reported by OLC for the Tokyo parks.

And Disney's far from the only one in that situation. The likelihood that the numbers "officially posted" are legitimate from anyone is pretty slim.

I mean, if Disneyland gets 30 million a year, that is wild…
