Disney Enterprises has filed a patent for a 3D extendable projection surface — a physical prop that extends, transforms, and retracts on demand while displaying visual effects onto itself.
The technology has clear potential applications for theme park attractions, and with multiple major Walt Disney World projects currently under construction, the timing of the filing is worth noting.
Patent application US 2026/0153748 A1, filed December 3, 2024 and published June 4, 2026, describes a system capable of generating large-scale show effects organically within a scene without breaking guest immersion.
The Core Problem It Solves
Large-scale show effects — tornadoes, waterfalls, geysers, rising terrain — have traditionally relied on static projection surfaces. Those props are visible to guests before and after the effect runs, which undermines the illusion.
This patent addresses that directly. The surface extends when needed and retracts completely out of sight when not in use, with the entire process controlled automatically.
How the System Works
The projection unit uses a deformable fabric surface stretched over internal structural rings or hoops. Actuators — winches and linear motors — extend or retract the surface via cables. When deployed, it forms a cone, pyramid, or funnel shape. When retracted, the rings nest flat and the entire structure disappears from view.
Projectors illuminate the surface from outside. Optional internal lighting elements, including strobe lights, illuminate it from within. An internal sock-like object can cast moving shadows through the fabric to add depth to the effect.
The system produces visual effects in three ways:
- Synchronized to a predetermined show sequence
- Interactive — responding to guest actions such as speech, movement, or gesture
- Location-based — changing based on where you are standing in the space
Guest Interaction Built In
A sensor unit incorporating RFID readers, microphones, and cameras detects guests and can trigger or modify effects in real time. That means the surface could react based on your MagicBand, what you say, or simply where you're standing.
The patent also notes the system is designed to be viewable in-the-round, so guests at multiple angles see the effect simultaneously. It can run as a fully automated system with no human operator required.
What the Patent Specifically Describes
The filing lists several scenarios the technology could simulate:
- A tornado forming and dropping to the ground
- A fountain or mountain rising
- A tree limb or plant growing
- A character's arm reaching out from within the surface
Could This Show Up at Walt Disney World?
Disney patents describe capabilities, not confirmed projects. There's no direct link between this filing and any specific attraction. That said, the timing is hard to ignore.
This patent was filed in December 2024, as construction was getting underway in the former Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island area at Magic Kingdom. Two significant projects are taking shape there: Piston Peak National Park, a Cars-themed land featuring a rally race through mountain terrain with geysers and weather effects, and Villains Land, the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom's history, which reportedly includes a coaster and dark ride being designed at a scale intended to rival Rise of the Resistance.
The effects this patent describes — geysers erupting, storms forming, terrain rising and collapsing, a character's arm reaching out — fit naturally with both environments. A geyser or dust storm effect that appears mid-ride and then vanishes without a static prop sitting in view would be exactly the kind of moment Piston Peak's rally race could use. For Villains Land, shape-shifting environments and conjured effects are the theatrical tools a villain-themed land built on an "incredibly twisted grand scale" would call for.
Neither project has been confirmed to use this technology. But among recent Disney patent filings, this one sits closer to the kinds of experiences currently in development than most.
