Solar Power at Disney Parks: Around the World in Panels
Posted: Wednesday April 22, 2026 2:29pm ET by WDWMAGIC Staff

Walt Disney World solar power now has the potential to cover 100% of the resort's daytime energy needs on a sunny day.

A New Solar Facility Joins the Mix at Walt Disney World

Walt Disney World's solar footprint just got bigger. A new 74,500-kilowatt facility spanning 484 acres in Levy County, Florida, is now supplying clean electricity to the resort. Built and operated by Bronson Solar in collaboration with the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District, the site adds another source of renewable power to the resort's energy mix.

The "Hidden Mickey" Solar Array

If you've heard of the Hidden Mickey solar array near EPCOT, it's exactly what it sounds like - a 5,000-kilowatt solar installation shaped like Mickey Mouse. It's one of the most recognizable renewable energy projects at any theme park in the world, and it's been generating clean power for years.

What Walt Disney World's Solar Power Actually Adds Up To

Four solar projects combined can now generate enough power to run the entire Walt Disney World resort - four theme parks, two water parks, and dozens of hotels - during daylight hours. Over the course of a year, that output translates to some significant numbers:

  • Reducing annual greenhouse gas emissions by more than 140,000 metric tons
  • Removing nearly 33,000 gasoline-powered cars from the road
  • Powering 19,000 homes for a year
  • Charging 15 billion smartphones
  • Powering the Walt Disney World monorail for 34 years

Solar Power Across Other Disney Parks

Walt Disney World isn't alone. Solar energy is now a fixture across multiple Disney destinations.

Disneyland Resort

At Disneyland Resort in California, 60% of the resort's electricity now comes from renewable energy through the Anaheim Public Utilities Green Power Program. Radiator Springs Racers at Disney California Adventure is powered by 1,400 solar panels. The resort has also built out EV charging infrastructure, and one in six fleet vehicles is now electric -- saving roughly 50,000 gallons of gasoline per year.

Disneyland Paris

In December 2023, Disneyland Paris completed Europe's largest solar canopy plant - a multi-year project covering more than 11,200 guest parking spaces with over 80,000 panels across 20 hectares. It produces 36 GWh of electricity annually, enough to power a town of more than 17,400 people.

Hong Kong Disneyland Resort

Hong Kong Disneyland recently finished phase two of Hong Kong's largest solar car park canopy. Nearly 400 bifacial solar panels - which capture sunlight from both sides - now cover 80 parking spaces in a backstage area, generating more than 200,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year.

Shanghai Disney Resort

As of late 2025, solar panels cover all applicable backstage rooftops and facades at Shanghai Disney Resort. Combined output has reached approximately 5.2 GWh of green electricity, cutting carbon emissions by more than 2,500 metric tons.

Tokyo Disney Resort

Tokyo Disney Resort has installed solar panels at 10 rooftop locations, with a combined capacity exceeding 1,500 kW, and plans to keep expanding year by year.

Disney Cruise Line

Both Disney Castaway Cay and Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point have on-site solar arrays generating power for the island destinations.

Glad you have the answer.

I agree, there are many environmental issues with solar; as you say the clearing of the trees, the effect on wildlife, the materials used to make solar panels are actually very harmful as well. Nuclear power IS THE ANSWER. There are forms of Nuclear that you can feed the waste back in into the system, and forms of Nuclear power where the waste is harmless. The reason countries like the US use the fuel we use for our Nuclear power plants is because we can use the same material to make Nuclear weapons. Maybe someday, humankind will build the harmless type Nuclear power plants and not worry abut making Nuclear weapons.

Florida is damn near made for solar power, but politically, it’s tangled up in a lot of utility profit margin nonsense. In particular, Tallahassee has gone out of their way to make selling back to the utility difficult or disallowed. We can’t truly have nice things.

Makes you wonder if they were just using this power to charge Iger when they plugged him in at night and can now divert that power to small world.

I don't understand the whole knocking down a boat load of trees for solar panels thing. My state is doing this too on the side of the highway. Not very environmental friendly.

I presume WDW is on the grid and sells the power generated by solar back to the power company to lower their electric bill and that WDW can’t actually run on solar energy. It would be cool if they could charge massive battery complexes and have battery back up for WDW, although its just too much energy to store and I would hate to think a battery complex that large going on fire with no way to extinguish it.

At some point you have to respect their creativity, not just when it comes to theming, but also when it comes to potential up-charges.

Charging 100% more for shaded parking is a new low... Oh wait... I read that wrong. ;) But... I wouldn't put it past Disney to do exactly that - Making money from the electricity generated by the solar panels, plus making money by calling the parking spots underneath "Premier Parking+". And some people would pay it and call it "a wonderful value!!!".

EricsBiscuit21 days ago

That’s a great idea! I would 100% charge more for shaded parking.

Frequent what? Were there frequent brown-outs before they started installing solar panels at WDW? Solar makes sense in Florida, without question. But I don't consider it cynicism to point out that they could have done things differently that didn't require razing more land, like they have done at other parks. If they had installed them over half of each of the existing theme park parking lots, I bet they'd be generating enough that they would be selling electricity back to ... whoever currently provides electricity in the area. Of course, then you'd have fist fights and cars ramming other cars to get one of the coveted "under-the-solar-panel" spots, which would obviously mean shaded parking... Hey, I smell an upcharge opportunity here!! "They're leaving money on the table by not doing this!" 🤪

Because Disney can't win without losing.

How does cynicism show up here, too? This seems like the kind of achievement Walt would have pursued had he lived to build EPCOT. And given the frequent energy crises we face, this was a very smart investment. It’s long interested me that those in power in the state of Florida are typically expected to vote against green energy yet you (rightfully) see solar panels everywhere in the Sunshine State. Where I live, we have plenty of wind and would love to capture that energy but…well, you know.

Believe it or not there used to be more, albeit they were smaller in scale. A bunch of the Fall ones got condensed into Wine&Dine while a bunch of the spring ones were condensed into Springtime Surprise, which are both larger. As a 19 year participant of the races, they have gotten near impossible to sign up for with the increased demand.
