Bob Iger shared Disney's approach to artificial intelligence during the company's Q1 2026 earnings call this molrning, addressing questions about the OpenAI partnership and how AI-generated content will be integrated into Disney Plus.

The Disney CEO clarified details of the company's licensing agreement with OpenAI, which allows users to create 30-second videos featuring approximately 250 Disney characters through the Sora AI platform. The agreement specifically excludes human voices or faces and runs for three years, with Disney receiving payment for the license.

Short-Form Content Strategy

Iger explained that Disney will curate Sora-created videos for inclusion on Disney Plus, jumpstarting the platform's short-form video offerings. The company has seen significant growth in short-form and user-generated content on platforms like YouTube and wants to add similar features to Disney Plus.

"What this deal does is by giving us the ability to curate what has been basically created by Sora onto Disney Plus is it jumpstarts our ability to have short form video on Disney Plus," Iger said.

Disney plans to enable Disney Plus subscribers to create their own short-form videos on the platform using Sora tools. Iger noted that ESPN has already implemented short-form content in its new offering.

Three AI Opportunities

Iger outlined three areas where Disney sees AI providing advantages:

  • Creativity: Using AI as a tool to help the creative process
  • Productivity: Improving efficiency across operations
  • Connectivity: Creating more intimate relationships with consumers and enabling more engaged interactions

No Impact on Programming

When asked about potential downstream effects on demand for new programming or archival content, Iger stated he doesn't expect AI-generated content to impact Disney's traditional programming at all.

The integrated experience combining Disney Plus and Hulu has already reduced subscriber churn, and Disney expects bundled subscribers to churn less overall. The company is developing technology for a one-app experience, which Iger said should arrive by the end of the calendar year.

Disney views AI implementation as part of its broader strategy to improve user experience and drive engagement on its streaming platforms while maintaining its core content offerings.

It’s not even true AI, it’s just fancy code that scrapes info from the internet. Keep AI in the data crunching sector to help create medical breakthroughs. No one wants AI slop.

Is there a bubble? Most likely. Will it burst? Probably. Will that be the end of Ai? No. Just like the dot com bubble burst didn't stop the app-ification of just about everything.

"Why didn't it happen??? AI told me it would!!!"

Ayla10 days ago

And won't they be dumbfounded when that doesn't happen...

You misspelled - "The greatest thing since the dot-com bubble!!!" Millennials and Gen-Z everywhere are predicting the end of the web as we know it within 5 years because of AI. AI - Yet another way for people to get dumber. 🤦‍♂️

Woof, I can see why Bob is getting out early, having to do something with AI that's clearly going to fade quickly.

Creatively bankrupt company spends a billion dollars unleashing AI unto the public... to create for them.

Trillions of dollars will need to be invested across servers, computing equipment, data center facilities and new power capacity, and support the boom in artificial intelligence and cloud computing, the ratings firm said in a report on Monday. The vast amounts of debt required to support the AI revolution have raised some concerns that a bubble may be building, and could eventually harm equity and credit investors if some of the technology underperforms high expectations.

Now, I could go into detail why some of those 'clips' of AI generated chimeras look bad and others look good. Or, I could post a nerdrage blog declaring all AI is slop and "they're stealing my Star Wars childhood!!!" Mind you, the high praise for LucasFilm of the past seems to ignore some pretty janky puppets and Lucas's own CGI tampering of released movies which most people hated. But... old Star Wars good, new Star Wars bad. And it seems we're still living in the era that what amounts to an opinion piece, that is, an editorial blog is printed as news/journalism.

You joke, but many management positions will be replaced by AI at companies like Disney over time, so while not the CEO it’ll still have an impact.

Brer PantherDec 26, 2025

Hey, here's an idea - instead of replacing the animators, why don't we replace Iger and the executives with AI instead? It's not like it would do a worse job running Disney than they do!

I'll play devils advocate for a bit. What if Sora is used to produce output for those consumers that are looking for inclusion? Exactly what guide rails will be put in place and what if some complain that they exclude what they want included ?

Brer PantherDec 21, 2025

Wouldn't it be hilarious if the general public started thinking "Why should we go see Disney movies in theaters? We can just make our own with Sora AI or whatever it's called at home for free!" and that led to the live action Moana flopping?
