The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Watch for Walt Disney World, warning of dangerously cold wind chills as low as 7F degrees and temperatures dropping to 20F degrees. The watch covers Saturday evening, January 31 through Sunday afternoon, February 1 2026.

This represents the highest level of cold weather alert the National Weather Service can issue. The designation "Extreme Cold Watch" with an "extraordinary threat" classification is rarely seen in Florida and indicates conditions that could lead to frostbite and hypothermia with limited exposure.

Extreme Cold Watch Details

Coverage: All counties in east central Florida, including Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties where Walt Disney World is located

Timing: Saturday evening (7 PM) through Sunday afternoon

Temperature Forecast:

  • Hard freeze with temperatures as low as 20 degrees
  • Wind chills as low as 7 degrees
  • Strong gusty winds: 35 to 45 mph or higher Saturday afternoon and evening

Threat Level: Extraordinary threat to life or property

The National Weather Service warns that dangerously cold wind chills could lead to frostbite and hypothermia, even with limited exposure.

Sunday Morning:

Sunday morning, February 1, will bring the most severe conditions Central Florida has experienced in years.

Sunday Morning Forecast:

  • Low temperatures: 20 degrees across most of the Orlando area
  • Wind chills: Teens across the region, with single-digit wind chills north of Orlando
  • Hard freeze probability: 60-90% for the Disney World area
  • Daytime high temperatures: Only reaching the 40s

Monday Morning Forecast:

  • Low temperatures: Low-to-mid 20s
  • Wind chills: Upper teens to mid-20s (lighter winds)
  • Hard freeze probability: 50-80%

Tuesday Morning:

  • Another round of very cold temperatures expected
  • Slow warming trend begins

Wind Chill of 7 Degrees

A wind chill of 7 degrees is life-threatening for unprepared individuals. This is not typical cold weather - this is Arctic-level cold for Florida.

Frostbite Risk:

  • Exposed skin can become frostbitten in 30 minutes or less
  • Fingers, toes, ears, and nose are most vulnerable
  • Children and elderly face higher risk

Hypothermia Risk:

  • Body temperature can drop dangerously low
  • Symptoms include confusion, drowsiness, and loss of coordination
  • Can occur even without extended outdoor exposure

Who Is Most At Risk:

  • Visitors from warm climates unfamiliar with extreme cold
  • Those without proper winter clothing
  • Young children and elderly visitors
  • People with heart or respiratory conditions
  • Anyone planning early morning park visits

Dangerous Wind Conditions Saturday

Before the extreme cold arrives, dangerous winds will develop Saturday afternoon and evening.

Saturday Wind Forecast:

  • Peak gusts: 35 to 45 mph or higher
  • Timing: Late afternoon and evening
  • Direction: West-northwest initially, then northwest

These strong winds will make Saturday afternoon uncomfortable and potentially dangerous for outdoor activities. The winds are critical because they drive the Arctic air southward and create the dangerous wind chills.

This Is a Rare Arctic Outbreak

The National Weather Service characterizes this as a "rare, significant Arctic cold outbreak." The weather pattern shows Arctic air traveling directly from Canada through the Florida Panhandle with minimal warming over the Gulf of Mexico.

Daily record low temperatures are anticipated Sunday morning across Central Florida. The combination of temperatures in the 20s and wind chills in the single digits to teens represents conditions rarely experienced in the Orlando area.

Park Touring During Extreme Cold Watch

Sunday Morning - Avoid:

  • Do not go to parks at rope drop
  • Do not attempt early morning hours
  • Wait until at least 11 AM to arrive at parks

Sunday Afternoon:

  • Temperatures only reach the 40s
  • Still requires heavy winter clothing
  • Focus on indoor attractions
  • Take frequent warming breaks

For anyone keeping score... That's 55% of Epic's rides down for the first 2 hours of park opening (not including early admission), 44% for the first 4 hours, and 33% for the first 5 hours or so. Not even including early closures. An insane stat, really.

Just think; some poor person had to ride Kali River Rapids prior to opening today. And probably again later since it went down.

It seems like it was silly to even try. Highs not hitting 50 and feels-like temps in the 30s, there was no reason to even attempt to open those rides today.

You could probably find overnight delivery of Amazon purchases of any type of clothing. Or, Uber/Lyft to a local mall.

Dudley Do-right Ripsaw Falls and Popeye and Blutos were aiming for a 12pm opening and that never happened. They will remain closed today.

I really can’t believe you have icicles when we’ve had none out here in Vancouver this winter, at all. Cherry blossom outside my house for proof …

I have asthma triggered by the cold weather. In spite on using an ECV, staying inside mostly, and wrapping my face with a scarf, I still had to pull out my portable nebulizer. Fortunately, I haven't had anyone accuse my of vaping, which was my fear.

I've noticed that. Stepping outside our room, the hallways are not warm. At least our actual room is.
