A Heat Advisory is in effect for Walt Disney World for the third day in a row. The National Weather Service in Melbourne has issued the advisory from 11 am to 7 pm today, July 11, with heat index values expected up to 110 degrees. Today's advisory ends an hour earlier than the past two days, at 7 pm instead of 8 pm.

The advisory covers Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties, along with Lake, Brevard, and Volusia counties and parts of the Treasure Coast. Highs reach the mid 90s, and rising humidity pushes the heat index up to 110 during peak afternoon hours.

Storm Chances Increase Today

Rain and storm chances are higher today than they've been the past two days, reaching 30 to 60 percent across the area. The morning should stay quiet, but a sea breeze collision over the interior late in the day will focus storm activity. A few strong storms are possible in the afternoon and evening, with frequent lightning, wind gusts up to 55 mph, and brief heavy downpours. Storms could linger past sunset before fading overnight.

Tips for Staying Safe at the Parks

  • Drink water before you feel thirsty.
  • Take breaks in air conditioning or shade every hour or so.
  • Wear light-colored, loose clothing.
  • Watch for signs of heat illness, including dizziness, nausea, or heavy sweating that suddenly stops.

If you're at the parks today, plan around both the heat and the afternoon storm chances. Get outdoor attractions done earlier in the day, and have an indoor backup plan for when storms move through later on.

What Comes Next

Sunday stays hot, with highs in the mid 90s and heat index values between 105 and 109. Rain and storm chances stay in the 30 to 60 percent range through the weekend and into early next week as moisture continues to build, with the best chances favoring the eastern side of the state.

A front moves toward the area early next week, which should keep highs slightly below this weekend's numbers, though still above normal. Current trends suggest heat index values stay below advisory criteria into early next week, but the Weather Service says additional Heat Advisories aren't out of the question given how hot the pattern has been.
