The National Weather Service has upgraded the fire danger for the Walt Disney World area to a Red Flag Warning for today, Thursday May 7, in effect from noon to 8pm.

The warning covers Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Lake, Volusia, and Brevard Counties — the full Walt Disney World resort area.

This is an escalation from yesterday's Fire Weather Watch.

Red Flag Warning conditions

Dangerous fire weather conditions are expected this afternoon and evening:

  • Minimum relative humidity: 27–35%
  • West-southwest winds at 15 mph, gusting to 20–25 mph
  • Temperatures in the mid 90s
  • Rapid or uncontrolled fire growth possible

Fire-sensitive conditions are also still expected south of the warning area.

Record heat today

Today is forecast to be one of the hottest days of the year so far for Central Florida. Widespread mid-90s are expected across most of the region, including along the coast. The offshore west-southwest flow will prevent the east coast sea breeze from forming, meaning there's no relief in store for afternoon park visitors.

Record high temperatures are forecast to be tied or broken at most areas across east central Florida today.

Even overnight, temperatures will stay above normal, with lows only dropping to the upper 60s to mid 70s.

If you're at Walt Disney World today, take the heat seriously:

  • Seek air-conditioned spaces regularly, especially between noon and 6pm
  • Stay hydrated throughout the day

Rain returns tomorrow through the weekend

A weak front moves into north central Florida Friday morning and stalls before lifting northward over the weekend. That will push moisture back into the region and bring afternoon and evening showers and storms.

Rain chances by day:

  • Friday: 20–40%, mainly afternoon and evening, north and inland areas
  • Saturday: 30–60% north of Okeechobee County and the Treasure Coast
  • Sunday: 20–40% across the full area

Isolated stronger storms are possible each day, with threats including frequent lightning, wind gusts up to 40–45 mph, and locally heavy rainfall of 1–2 inches.

Despite the return of rain, temperatures stay above normal through the weekend. Highs in the low to mid 90s combined with rising humidity will push heat index values into the mid to upper 90s, with some spots potentially hitting 100°F. Heat impacts will continue through the weekend, particularly for heat-sensitive visitors.

Early next week

A cold front is expected to push through the area Monday night, with scattered showers and storms developing ahead of it Monday. Rain chances climb to 40–60% Monday, with some stronger storm potential during the afternoon. Behind the front, temperatures are forecast to drop to more seasonal values in the 80s Tuesday through Wednesday.

Planning your Walt Disney World visit

  • Today: Peak heat and fire danger noon–8pm. Rope drop early and get inside by midday
  • Tonight: Warm overnight, upper 60s to mid 70s
  • Friday–Sunday: Afternoon storms return. Carry a poncho and expect lightning holds on outdoor attractions
  • Monday: Another round of storms before the front clears and conditions improve Tuesday
