The Walt Disney World Railroad has been added to Magic Kingdom's refurbishment calendar. The train is listed as closed from September 28 through October 29, 2026. Disney has not said why the railroad is closing this time.
This closure comes on top of a string of changes to the railroad over the past year.
Shuttle Route Since July 2025
The railroad stopped running its full loop around Magic Kingdom on July 7, 2025. Disney made the change as construction started on the Cars and Disney Villains Land expansions in Frontierland.
Since then, the train has run as a shuttle. It travels only between the Main Street, U.S.A. station and the Storybook Circus station in Fantasyland, a trip of about 5 minutes each way. The Frontierland station is skipped entirely, since that stretch of track runs through the construction zone.
Disney has said the full loop will come back once the new lands open, but hasn't given a date.
Stitch Audio Added to the Ride
Disney added a Stitch-themed audio track to the railroad on July 7, 2025, the same day the shuttle route started. Stitch narrates the trip from Main Street to Fantasyland. The return trip still uses the standard conductor narration.
Disney also changed some of the seating inside the train cars at that time. You can now choose to sit facing forward or backward.
The railroad has faced long closures before. It was closed for close to four years during construction of TRON Lightcycle/Run.
The current shuttle setup is expected to stay in place for the length of the Cars and Villains Land construction, which is a multi-year project. Right now, you can still ride the train between Main Street and Fantasyland, but not the full loop that's been part of the park since it opened.
