New Spaceship Earth concept art

Disney has announced today that Spaceship Earth will close beginning May 26 2020 to begin a major refurbishment.

According to Disney, "the next iteration of Spaceship Earth will focus on the story of humanity, following our long journey from prehistoric humans to today brought to life with magic and depth that only Disney can deliver. Many of the moments you know and love will be updated in amazing ways, blended with brand-new scenes to tell a story about our human experience."

Details remain scarce on what changes will be made, but Disney has said that "Throughout the attraction, you’ll hear new narration and see how light plays a central role in our shared human journey, coming to life in dynamic ways in a celebration of the magic that’s possible when we all come together." The concept art above shows the new look of the Egypt scene.

A reopening date is yet to be announced, but there is speculation that the work will take 2 to 3 years.

I love that idea honestly. The Perrin and Cronkite narrations don’t exist in HD so if they pulled them out of the Archives and remastered them that would be amazing.

Definitely agree the whole interactive screen descent was lousy. But I'd say there's one good reason for keeping the screens - ability to select your language.* And while we're at it, I also didn't mind the "show us where you're from" part and how that was sent to the big map in the post show. In fact, keeping those elements would fit nicely into the whole "shared story" reboot Disney was teasing. So basically keep the screens for that but nothing else. *How about an added Easter egg selection for the fans? Something where you tap and hold two languages or something and a hidden menu lets you choose a previous SSE narration (Perrin, Cronkite, Irons, or Dench). Sorta like the hidden songs on Rip, Ride, Rocket at Universal. Make it happen!

Yeah exactly, especially when every previous incarnation had various things to look at physically from 180 top and down.

I just hope the day finally comes when the screens on the ride vehicle are finally gone. Not fond of the interactive element during the final minutes of the attraction.

Correct.

Can you put it on the golf ball?

Why did I read this in @realBobChapek 's voice? I just got chills similar to the ones I get during horror movies.

realBobChapekJul 15, 2020

So does this mean I can finally put some IP in that stupid golf ball?

Journey of Water, The Event Pavilion and the PLAY! Pavilion are all represented in the Epcot Experience. Spaceship Earth and Mary Poppins are not.

MisterPenguinJul 15, 2020

That's not how that works.

Space Ship Earth is the very face of Walt Disney World, second only to the Castle. I hope and predict they will wait until Disney can give it all the Love it deserves.
