A new promo from ABC for Disney Celebrates America 250 opens with music from Reflections of Earth, the former EPCOT nighttime spectacular that ran for 20 years. Fans of the show will recognize Act 1: Chaos — the iconic opening sequence score — from the first few seconds.

IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth debuted at EPCOT on September 22, 1999, created from scratch for the Walt Disney World 15-month Millennium Celebration. It originally launched as IllumiNations 2000: Reflections of Earth, with the name changing to IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth on January 1, 2001, after the Millennium Celebration closed.

The show featured more than 30 percent more fireworks than any prior EPCOT show and ran for 20 years before its final performance on September 30, 2019. It was replaced by Epcot Forever, followed by HarmonioUS in 2020.

The original music was composed by Gavin Greenaway and supervised by Hans Zimmer — the Oscar-winning composer behind Disney's The Lion King.

Anyone seen or heard about any patriotic Mickey merchandise in the parks? I know they have a few bland things on DisneyStore.com but seriously - A 1776-garbed Mickey/Liberty Square shirt? There are plenty of merchandising opportunities just ready for the taking.

Sweet fancy Moses. I had a cover-all on my “Disney Buzzword Bingo” card from that one.

Agree I mean parts of Luminous are okay, love the opening, but after that its kind of a mess. The ROE music is iconic and timeless, great to use for 250th type promos.

montyz814 days ago

You're not in the minority. Doesn't do anything for me either. I still think an upgrades ROE could be done.

Comped4 days ago

I have a list somewhere of just a small amount of places the music has shown up (I was told it's been played on every continent in some capacity, and that wouldn't surprise me)... Customs was the highest profile place technically (and I was told the producers of RoE initially refused to take any money for the use of their music by the feds - even if they did later take the money from State when it came time for the video to be made), but not the only one.

I didn't know they were doing a telecast. That's fun. Do we know if they're filming live or will it be like the Christmas parade and pre-taped? I love that music so much. Delighted to see it used in any way. I know I'm the minority but Luminous just doesn't land with me in the same way.

V_L_Raptor4 days ago

I’ve never been in the right place to see this video at an airport, but wow, that’s lovely. Great way for that music to live on.

FerretAfros5 days ago

No, Illuminations isn't coming back. The music has been used for all sorts of things through the years, from the ABC News intro to Drum and Bugle Corps shows to the Vancouver Olympics. It's a great piece of music that works well in a variety of settings, but that doesn't mean they have any intention of bringing the show back to Epcot in a meaningful way. It was memorably used as the score for a welcome video that played for 10-15 years in airports across the country as people waited in line at customs. Perhaps they're tapping into that patriotic memory for the 250th ad:
