Gino

Gino, a western lowland gorilla and one of the original members of Disney's Animal Kingdom, has died at age 44. He had lived at the park for nearly three decades and was known for his calm demeanor and strong presence within the gorilla troop on the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail.

Dr. Mark Penning, Vice President of Disney's Animals, Science and Environment, shared the news in a statement, writing:

"We are heartbroken to share the passing of Gino, our beloved 44-year-old western lowland gorilla. For nearly 30 years, Gino touched countless lives at Disney's Animal Kingdom with his playful spirit, gentle humor, and steady presence as a devoted father and troop leader."

Conservation and Legacy

Western lowland gorillas are critically endangered, with populations threatened by habitat destruction, poaching, and disease. Gino's role in breeding programs and his daily presence at the park helped raise awareness about the species' plight.

Penning's statement closed with a note of gratitude:

"Gino leaves behind an incredible legacy - 14 offspring, global contributions to gorilla care and conservation, and the lasting memories of every cast member and guest he inspired... You will always be part of our family."

Disney has not shared the cause of death but noted that Gino would have turned 45 in December.

Sad to hear. Average lifespan of a gorilla in captivity is 40-50 years, so I’d say him being down the middle of that range is pretty good. Left his mark on gorilla conservation by fathering 14. RIP Gino. Hope the other gorillas that were routinely around him will be ok once they notice his absence.
Gorilla Falls is probably my favorite animal area at AK, would hang around and watch the gorillas way longer than one should. Every time I was there he would kind of be by himself looking over all the others.
That's sad. He was an OG.
Legitimately sad about this. Would always spend a good deal of time watching the gorillas at AK and found the family dynamic of the troop to be so beyond fascinating, not least of all for Gino's "Dad's off chilling but close by" vibes. Always served as a reminder to me of how close to human they really are. Sad day.
Has anyone heard if the family wi be relocated?
