New aerial imagery from @bioreconstruct gives us our clearest view yet of major site preparation work now underway for the upcoming Monsters, Inc.-themed “door coaster” at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
The photos, taken from above the Cast Member parking lot behind Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and Grand Avenue, shows that a large section of the lot has now been completely cleared. The asphalt has been ground down, most light poles removed, and the rectangular building footprint is becoming clearly defined. Groundwork appears underway for utility access and foundation prep.
This location will be the site of the coaster’s massive show building—expected to be roughly 103,000 square feet based on recent data from the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District’s GIS mapping tools. That makes the upcoming “door coaster” one of the largest show buildings at Walt Disney World, second only to EPCOT’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind (197,000 sq ft). For comparison:
- Monsters Door Coaster: 103,000 sq ft
- Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance: 92,000 sq ft
- DINOSAUR at Animal Kingdom: 85,000 sq ft
- Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster: 71,000 sq ft
- Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind: 197,000 sq ft
The new attraction will be part of a larger Monstropolis expansion that will take over the former Muppet*Vision 3D area and surrounding Grand Park. While some existing buildings like PizzeRizzo and the Muppet theater structure will be reused for the land, the coaster show building itself is being constructed beyond the current guest-accessible areas, expanding the physical boundaries of the park.
No official name or opening timeline has been announced for the ride, but the early construction activity shows major progress behind the scenes. Stay tuned for further updates as work continues on Disney’s next major addition to Hollywood Studios.
