Does DHS really need something this people-eating after 5pm most days, though? Just now, RnRC is at 70 minutes, SDD at 55 and that’s with MMRR down.

This was a well thought out post but I'm starting to think this show is headed towards expiration. Combine the show thousand cuts and with a brand new Indy attraction opening next year with a potential M&G and a playground, Indy representation at WDW is alive and well. There simply isn't enough reason to have that much Indy IP at WDW. Indy is a capacity eater - but it also doesn't run all day. The current operating hours for tomorrow for instance is 10:45 AM to 4:30 PM. It's also on a big piece of property that isn't consuming guests in the early morning or evenings due to it's operations schedule. I sort of expect this attraction to close relatively permanently at some point after Monstropolis fully opens. Maybe new plans will be unveiled at D23 without indicating a closure of course. Disney avoids those at D23. I like the idea of developing a dark ride in this space or maybe we'll finally get a boat or water ride at DHS. Moana log flume anyone? And re-theming Star Tours could also play a role into whatever they do. Expanding out to more parking space would be welcome and might allow them to get more attractions in that space overall.

I sort of reject the premise that Indy is full because the people seeing it are having trouble experiencing other experiences because if that were the case I feel the smattering of other shows would also be that consistently packed but they aren’t save for certain times of day. In my experience if guests are having trouble getting on something, they simply leave. Park hop, go back to the hotel, etc.

I didn't suggest Indy is obsolete or should go away completely, only that its enduring popularity may be attributed to more things than just the content of the show itself. The park needs more things like Indy, and if it ever were replaced, than with something comparable

But doesn't that support keeping Indy rather than removing it? I agree Hollywood Studios needs more high capacity attractions and shows. That's exactly why the Indy Stunt Show is valuable. It absorbs thousands of guests per day, offers a low wait experience, and helps distribute crowds throughout the park. If Disney's newer additions are struggling with capacity, removing one of the park's largest capacity attractions seems counterproductive unless it's being replaced with something that can match or exceed its popularity which seems needlessly redundant considering how many seats it fills every single show in its current state. The fact that Disney hasn't built many attractions like Indy recently doesn't mean Indy is obsolete. If anything, it makes attractions like Indy more important because they're becoming increasingly rare.

Pretty much agree with you word for word. It’s always been my favorite show on WDW property. And ever since LMA! closed, I felt it was extremely important to keep this one around. But unfortunately, the show has become a shell of its former self, even well before the boulder incident. It’s just sad to watch nowadays. It’s time to put it out of its misery.

I love this show so much, always have since my early trips as a child. Raiders of the Lost Ark is my favorite movie of all time, The show was and still is always at the top of my "things I must do every visit" list. I would be devastated to see it go, however its hard not to see the cuts and censoring that affect the show overall. The changes made during the Covid closure to sanitize the show took always some great moments including one of the most famous moments of film history where Indy shoots the swordsman. Seeing the "Generic German Military Soldiers Who Are Definitely Not Known By Any Other Name" just run away instead of being gunned down by Marion in the Flying Wing just feels hollow and takes away from her character. Sure she's a damsel in distress that gives our hero someone to rescue, but at the same time she guns down a squad of goons on her own. Finally the loss of the boulder is just too much. I am very happy that Robert Herrick has recovered and he is back at his job and I'm not blaming him for the boulder not being there. It's just sad that the big effect capping off Act 1 of the show, recreating one of the greatest cinematic moments in history is just gone. I know that modern engineering can come up with more reliable ways to safely handle the boulder prop, but sadly I feel the boulder will never come back due to the overcautious nature of the company and it's lawyers. What I would love to see is the show redeveloped into a full contained story. As much as I love the "We're Making A Movie" story line (I still wish the studio tour was around), dropping that and making a straight driven narrative like Waterworld and Jason Bourne over at Universal would be great. Hell, they could even keep most of the current stunt sequences as is, just add more around them. Use this old concept art from Chuck Ballew, the concept artist from The Indiana Jones Adventure, and just make a new show that can still be spectacular and live up to the Indiana Jones name! But on topic I'm curious what this play structure will look like!

All of which have insufficient capacity for their demand (especially the Toy Story rides) which is why they command such long waits and can charge a premium for LL. What DHS needs (really all WDW parks) are attractions and shows that can absorb and distribute excess crowds and offer slack capacity. Replacing GMR with RR is the opposite of this That's not what Disney has been building. That is not what they are building now.

I think the biggest flaw in the "nothing else to do" argument is that Hollywood Studios has added a ton of major attractions over the years, especially recently with Toy Story Land, Galaxy's Edge, Runaway Railway, and soon Monstropolis. If Indy was only a fallback option, its attendance should have steadily declined as those additions opened. Instead, it continues filling one of the largest theaters on Disney property multiple times a day. Capacity alone doesn't keep a show popular for nearly 40 years. Plenty of high capacity attractions have struggled when guest interest wasn't there. The fact that Indy still draws crowds despite being largely unchanged suggests people genuinely enjoy it. That's not to say it couldn't use a refresh, but there's a big difference between "needs updates" and "has run its course." The attendance numbers seem to support the former, not the latter.
