In a new press release today, Disney has provided a few more details on what we can expect from the Fantasmic! relaunch at Walt Disney World.

Disney says, "The iconic “Fantasmic!” at Disney’s Hollywood Studios will make its much-anticipated return later in 2022 with a new show sequence featuring Disney characters – Mulan, Elsa, Aladdin, Pocahontas and Moana – in heroic moments, as well as new technical enhancements. Guests won’t want to miss this spectacle set on a canvas of water where the forces of good and evil battle it out in Mickey’s dream. The extravagant, open-air nighttime musical boasts more than 50 live performers, massive sets, stunning effects, rousing music and dazzling pyrotechnics."

The new scene will replace the existing Pocahontas segment.

Work has been underway on refurbishing almost all areas of the Hollywood Hills Amphitheater, which includes new lighting system, new fountains, and a rebuild of Steamboat Mickey.

Disney has stopped short of offering an opening date, but our latest information suggests that we will see Fantasmic! this summer, possibly in July 2022.

How much longer will the WDW Fantasmic Dragon on a Stick stick around? A) It will be replaced during this refurbishment as a special surprise! (react with LIKE) B) It will be replaced during the next refurbishment, which is likely at least ten years away. (react with LOVE) C) It will never be replaced, they will just keep on fixing the crane and maybe, if we're lucky, refresh the ribbons hanging from the neck. (react with ANGRY).

Doesn't seem like it was total loss........looks like FOF was put in a Special Adventure Friends Cavalcade!

"stunt activation and transformation lead"

WDW has been pulling stunts nonstop since they reopened from the pandemic. Genie+ is the most jaw-dropping stunt I’ve ever seen. I wonder if Bob Chapek lists “stunt coordinator” under “special skills” on his résumé.

D23 recorded video/interviews during the most recent media event and in a segment the hosts talked with Katrina Rick about the Fantasmic! upgrades - see them here at the 9:23 minute mark.

Walt Disney Entertainment expected it to only last as long as the Disneyland version did, and it stuck around because the way the theater is designed there's not much else that can go there without a complete teardown and rebuild to provide more appropriate facilities. You had those orchestral events for one summer but nothing ever since, probably because the labor was extremely expensive at some $250 a night per musician, and reactions were tepid at best. If anything before they put something different there, that theater needs a redo.

At this point, I'd be willing to accept a grade school production of the Three Little pigs replacing beauty and the beast live on stage. It has outlived its usefulness.
