Piston Peak Construction Site - January 19. 2026

New aerial photos shared by @bioreconstruct on X provide the latest look at the rapidly changing landscape behind Frontierland in Magic Kingdom, where Disney is preparing the former Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island footprint for the upcoming Cars-themed expansion, Piston Peak.

Ground Clearing Continues Across Former Rivers of America

The newest images show that large-scale ground clearing remains the focus across much of the site, with vast areas now fully stripped and graded. Construction vehicles and equipment continue to work across the former river basin, reshaping the terrain as Disney transitions the area from demolition into early site preparation.

Concrete Forms Mark Start of Construction

The most notable development in this update is the apparent start of actual construction. In an area of the former Rivers of America nearest to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, the aerial photos show concrete forms now in place, suggesting the first steps toward structural foundations or infrastructure work.

Piston Peak will reimagine this section of Magic Kingdom with a rugged national park setting within the Cars universe, featuring a major off-road rally attraction and a second family-friendly experience. The project is part of Magic Kingdom's largest expansion to date, alongside the upcoming Disney Villains Land.

This is accurate. That map would only show anything tied into the sanitary lines IE bathrooms and kitchens.

Extensive site prep is occurring. Just because what we can see at the moment bores you does not mean things are not progressing apace.

I guess the good news is it appears they have night lights installed so work my start happening overnight? Thus far, the "pace" of the construction has not exactly seemed "urgent."

They may be the only buildings with water/sewer hook-ups. The skinny one strikes me as restrooms and QS.

I think the buildings we are seeing now are ones that need to be started on to meet the various deadlines disney wants to meet. Even if some are to open other sooner then others, food booths and smaller buildings can wait. I also still say disney is planning on doing sm to get the construction walls pushed further back. Whether that be building the new river/stream so that could be open, or the what hopefully will be a HM bar building open. I tr.uly feel they are gonna do sm so its not 1-5 years of these walls

DSNY podcast has a nice video, and he commented that possibly the only buildings were seeing now are for atttaction/show buildings, and that perhaps shopping or dining is in a different phase? Which may make some sense, but since this deals with sewage/water (I think?) that would have to be factored at this juncture now if not mistaken

Really curious what the final pathways layout will look like between TBA's bottom turnabout and the boardwalk and new stream/Cars mountain thing. Wondering if the boardwalk there might stay but the skinnier boardwalk goes away? I'd be surprised if guests walk at the same elevation as the bottom TBA turn but idk

I 100% believe we are not seeing every building that will be there in these outlines. I think most people are doing the typical "jump to conclusions without knowing the full picture" deal. I am very confident that there will be more buildings in the land along with theme facades/scenery.

I thought the long skinny building might be a show scene too. But then I kept asking myself where are the shops? One of these buildings has got to be for shops? It would make sense if it is was a series of facades like a little village of shops. But at the same time it would be weird for them to all be on one side. Do we think there are more buildings not shown here? There’s gotta be some kind of shops and quick service restaurant.

That long narrow structure in Disneyland's Galaxy Edge is the Fantasmic barge storage building. It wasn't built at DHS's version because obviously there is no river show next to it. I doubt the long narrow building in the Villain's plans is for a barge/parade storage, so it will be interesting to see what its actually for. I think it will be a show scene for the land's rollercoaster. But I assume they may put a similar berm on top of it like the Galaxy Edge one.

Interesting but I don't think practically with what we've gotten thus far that they would confidentally put an opening date so early. Not to mention not atleast tease an opening date that is supposed to be earlier than Tropical Americas.

Question , picked up a magazine at CVS that was all about the Disney Parks past, present, & future. Wasn't expecting anything new per se and everything in the magazine was accurate about the future projects and timelines. That is except for Cars, which it said "the piston peak area is expected to open in late 2026 or early 2027." And while I know this isn't a Disney owned magazine, I found it so odd everything else had the correct years and details so I wanted to ask, what's the current timeline of this project, and is a year from now totally out of question (which I assume it is still)

I think this is correct especially in regard to the long mystery structure which does remind me of a similar build from Disneyland's version of Galaxy's edge. There was very long and narrow structure that divided the shortened Rivers of America from Galaxy's edge. The train side became the rock-work and waterfall. The top and Galaxy's Edge side became a tree covered berm much as you show here. This was partly for sight-lines and also to block sound. They may want to block out the sounds of the "wildest ride in the wilderness" from the entrance to Villains. I'd love if it had similar waterfalls on the Big Thunder side (another great sound buffer.) Here's a pic of the area under construction from Westcoaster.net: and the finished waterfall:
