Carousel of Progress Gets WDI-Filed Permit Ahead of Planned Updates at Magic Kingdom

Walt Disney Imagineering has filed a Notice of Commencement permit for fire protection system work at Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress at Magic Kingdom.

The permit's filing by WDI rather than Disney's typical facilities contractor is notable. When Imagineering files permits directly instead of Buena Vista Construction Company, it typically indicates show-related changes rather than routine maintenance work.

Recent WDI permits for fire protection systems have appeared at other active project sites, including the Monsters Inc. Land development at Disney's Hollywood Studios. This pattern suggests the work may connect to larger project scopes.

Disney announced plans to add an Audio-Animatronics figure of Walt Disney to Carousel of Progress during last year's Destination D23 event. The new introductory scene will feature Walt sharing his vision of progress before the family's story begins.

Whether this fire protection permit relates to those announced changes remains unclear. The permit does not specify a timeline or scope beyond the fire system work.

Disney has not announced a closure date for the attraction or provided a completion timeline for the planned updates.

    Background on the Announced Changes

The Walt Disney Audio-Animatronics figure will mark one of the most significant changes to the attraction in decades. Kirsten Komoroske, Executive Director of The Walt Disney Family Museum, called it "an exciting milestone in our shared mission to celebrate the story of the man behind the magic."

Carousel of Progress debuted at the 1964 New York World's Fair and moved to Magic Kingdom in 1975. It holds the record as the longest-running stage show in American theater history.

Imagineers indicated the family characters may also receive updates, though details remain limited.

The attraction continues operating on its normal schedule, with no date yet announced for the debut of the new scene.

It aint that deep and im not reading all of that.

My guess is they simply replaced the fabric in theaters that needed it, and didn’t replace it the others to save on unnecessary (in their minds atleast) for the time being, maintenance costs. Or, they’re waiting for when they can get a higher budget approved to then go ahead and upgrade the rest of the theatre. I get the logic there.

It’s weird because some of the theaters are still the old fabric Nope! Which is why I thought it was an ongoing and new project!

Are we still allowed to discuss hypothetical scenarios on these boards or was there an update to the TOS?

    wdw71fanFeb 06, 2026

pretty important to add these.. Theres an oven fire in the attraction several times a day.

This is who I was responding to, my response was clearly stated as a solution to a hypothetical scenario. See? If you don’t believe me, please read the thread from this post-going forward. That’s exactly what was intended, promise:

Well that’s interesting, the post you’re responding to here is, again, ‘from November of Last Year’, and you’re referencing a post that clearly isn’t in the same context nor the same time frame, yet you’ve weirdly assumed it was… my question is, why?? I certainly hope that wasn’t intentional on your part and it was a simple mistake. But if not, why would you try to frame my response as being related to that when there very clearly is a time difference and difference in context & the content of the post comparatively? Honest question. Read my posts again, who & what they’re responding to, within the frame of context discussed already here, and look at the time it was posted. It very clearly isn’t the same context, the meaning & timing of the post isn’t the same as the one I had in the CBJ thread, and it didn’t spring up the same way either. Notice I mentioned nothing about corporate sabotaging non-film IP based projects like I did there. So why exactly are you taking this post that way here? My guess is it was a genuine mistake or misreading, but please, for next time, could you try to pay closer attention to the time posts are posted and their context. Not trying to be mean, but please, take that into more consideration next time so more issues don’t spring up. :

Based on my last visit there's at least one theater that still doesn't have new seating

Yeah, it's one of the last attraction buildings at the MK that, while it having sprinklers and a sprinkler monitoring system, does not have a full fledged fire alarm system with occupant notification.

That’s great! Glad to see continual, tasteful enhancements coming to this attraction! Really hope further updates to the show itself will be good too! 👍🏻👍🏻
