Disney has confirmed Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will reopen in early May 2026 at Magic Kingdom.
"The attraction will reopen with new magic and the shine and polish of an all-over refurbishment in early May," Disney said.
No specific date has been announced yet.
What to Expect
The refurbishment includes all-new trains and refreshed animatronics throughout the attraction. Effects that have been dormant for years are being restored.
A new Rainbow Caverns scene will feature phosphorescent pools and iridescent stalactites and stalagmites. This addition draws inspiration from Disneyland's early Mine Train Through Nature's Wonderland attraction.
Wyatt Winter, Executive Producer at Walt Disney Imagineering, confirmed on Good Morning America that guests will see gold on the mountain for the first time in the attraction's Magic Kingdom history.
Timeline Update
Disney previously announced a general spring 2026 timeframe for the reopening. The early May window narrows that timeline and falls within the spring season, which runs through June 20, 2026.
The Story
The attraction maintains its narrative centered on Barnabas T. Bullion, founder of the Big Thunder Mountain Company. His gold rush ambitions met resistance as the mountain fought back against mining operations.
Disney describes this as a "mountain-top to cavern-deep refurbishment" that preserves the ride's core experience while adding new storytelling layers.
You'll still get the same fast-paced thrills, sharp turns, and runaway mine train action. The update adds refreshed effects, expanded storytelling, and increased detail throughout the ride.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is set to reopen at Magic Kingdom in early May 2026.
