Disney Confirms Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Will Reopen in Spring 2026

Disney has officially announced that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will reopen at Magic Kingdom in spring 2026, confirming the timeline that we have long been tracking through permits and construction progress.

The announcement, made today by Disney, marks the first time an explicit timeframe has been shared since the attraction closed on January 6, 2025 for what has become its most extensive refurbishment since it opened.

The fan-favorite Frontierland attraction is getting what Disney calls "new magic".

The Legend of Barnabas T. Bullion Lives On

When Big Thunder returns next year, guests will once again find themselves caught in the gold rush ambitions of Barnabas T. Bullion, the founder of the Big Thunder Mountain Company. According to Disney, Bullion's dreams of striking it rich in the Big Thunder region quickly spiraled out of control as the mountain itself began to push back.

Machines broke down. Mines collapsed. And despite all efforts to dig deeper, nature--and something more mysterious--refused to be tamed. When the newly updated trains take off once again in 2026, riders will come face-to-face with the unpredictable power of the mountain itself.

New Scene: The Rainbow Caverns

Among the new additions is a striking underground scene that will send trains into a mysterious cavern glowing with phosphorescent pools and shimmering with iridescent stalactites and stalagmites.

This new scene, inspired by the Rainbow Caverns of Disneyland's early Mine Train Through Nature's Wonderland attraction, blends nostalgic visual effects with new storytelling. But while it may look peaceful at first, the caverns are anything but safe.

Disney teases that the "menacing rumble" deep within the cave could be a sign that guests are not exactly welcome. The addition promises to heighten the tension and immersion of the ride while honoring the attraction's legendary past.

A Full Mountain-to-Cavern Refurbishment

This scene is part of what Disney describes as a "mountain-top to cavern-deep refurbishment" designed to preserve the ride's legacy while updating it for a new generation. The updated Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will continue to offer the same fast-paced thrills, sharp turns, and runaway mine train action that guests know and love - but now with refreshed effects, expanded storytelling, and new layers of detail woven into the classic ride experience.

Not to mention, the refurbishment of the rocks would require part of the mountain to be demolished and rebuilt!

Paris also has the splashdown into the river before the 2nd lift, which looks great from Phantom Manor's front porch

The only difference is the stretch of track right before and through the flooded town at MK. There's a helix right before the town (it's just a curve at DL) and the track itself is slightly more straight as it goes through the town, though it have that "wobbling" sequence as it goes through it (something I wonder if they're actually going to keep fully intact). Otherwise it's a mirror image with variations to the scenery. Interestingly, California's is the only version of BTM that uses that mirrored track orientation. MK, Paris and Tokyo all follow the same orientation as one another. MK however is the only version with that extra helix and wobbling section before lift 2. Paris and Tokyo just reuse Disneyland's simple non-helix curve (and of course lack a town scene entirely there). Though Paris does have its own unique track layout around the load/unload station since it has to travel a ways underneath the river to get to the island (it's also quite fast in those sections). I'm not as familiar with Tokyo's, but the station is also positioned a bit differently and the track connecting it is altered a bit to compensate.

Ok so, help me out here. What exactly is the difference in layout? I see the straightaway through the town is missing from Disneyland, and an additional helix at the top end. But I can't fill in the blanks.

Cocoa butter.

Just realized I forgot that the tracks of Expedition Everest and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train are also brown. Guess that rules out the Florida sun?

I got it off google images, not sure if this page is the original source (says someone named Dan Hiller took them) but it has a ton of construction photos- http://www.imagineeringdisney.com/blog/2014/3/21/big-thunder-mountain-railroad-construction-magic-kingdom.html Coaster track is often one of the earlier things to be built during construction on these types of themed mountain coasters, alongside other basic steel framework. Makes sense to tackle that earlier, and keep it as separate as possible from the scenery elements.

Now that is an amazing and fascinating picture! Where did you find it? I didn't realize they built the mountain around the track. Are there more pictures from this time?

When the wood ties are all in place around it the track structure won’t be that noticeable. I can give them a pass here. The last lift hill remaining unchanged will be pathetic

MerlinTheGoat6 days ago

Yeah the original track was a matte aged looking rust color. And it wasn't because of actual rust presumably, it can be seen here from early construction where the steel was just starting to go up and the track was still being installed.

Any hints on when this is opening? Should be soon(ish). We are going in early Jun, and I hope it is running by then as it’s my wife’s favorite.

Was the track ever actually brown?

Probably didn't want to spend the extra money on a painted track.

Maybe something to do with the Florida sun?
