Big Thunder Mountain Railroad reopens officially tomorrow, May 3, but the question this morning is whether Disney will offer a soft opening today ahead of the scheduled return.
As of 8:15am, the picture at the Frontierland attraction suggests it isn't quite there yet.
What We're Seeing
Cast members are stationed in front of the row of rolling bushes that still block the entrance to the attraction. No trains are cycling on the track. Crews are visible inside the queue area working on finishing touches.
The rolling bushes - which replaced construction walls earlier this week - remain in place as the final barrier between guests and the refurbished attraction.
Soft Opening Still Possible
The absence of cycling trains and the presence of work crews this morning make a soft opening in the early hours unlikely. However, the situation can change quickly at Magic Kingdom.
Disney regularly uses the hours between park opening and early afternoon to complete final checks before allowing guests into a newly refurbished or opened attraction. If crews clear the queue and trains begin test cycling later today, a soft opening remains possible.
What's New When It Opens
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad returns with new track, new trains, refreshed animatronics, and restored effects throughout. A new Rainbow Caverns scene features phosphorescent pools and iridescent stalactites and stalagmites. A new bat cave scene adds over 2,000 bats and special effects including glowing eyes and fans that move the show set bats.
The height requirement drops from 40 inches to 38 inches when the attraction reopens, opening it to younger guests.
The official reopening of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is scheduled for tomorrow, May 3, 2026, at Magic Kingdom.
