After years leading animal care and conservation efforts across Disney's parks and resorts, Dr. Mark Penning has retired from his role as Vice President of Animals, Science, and Environment for Disney Experiences.

Dr. Penning has been appointed as the new director of the North Carolina Zoo, announced by the N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR). He begins his tenure there this summer.

At Disney Experiences, Dr. Penning oversaw animal care, conservation, and environmental initiatives across:

  • Disney's Animal Kingdom
  • Animal Kingdom Lodge
  • The Seas with Nemo and Friends at Epcot
  • Disney parks around the world

Dr. Penning is a veterinarian with a focus on wildlife. Before joining Disney, he served as CEO of the South African Association for Marine Biological Research in Durban, South Africa.

He has also served as president of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums and as a board member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. He currently sits on the board of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International and is a Trustee of Wild Welfare.

The North Carolina Zoo is described as the world's largest natural habitat zoo. Governor Josh Stein welcomed the appointment, saying Dr. Penning's "leadership, experience, and vision" would take the zoo to the next level.

"I am very excited to be moving to the beautiful state of North Carolina and joining the fabulous team at the North Carolina Zoo," Penning said. "I have long admired the zoo with its stunningly picturesque setting, modern animal habitats, engaging experiences for visitors, and talented team of zoo professionals. They have created a world-class destination where families can connect with nature and with each other and experience the joy and wonder of being outdoors. It is an honor and a privilege for me to join the team."

The NC Zoo is amazing. One of the best in the country if not the best.

Maybe the next VP of Animals will bring some new species to the park.

He's retired from Disney. He has earned his retirement benefits from there.

If he's reached a company's criteria for "retirement", often related to benefits and perks, then he's considered "retired" from that company. At a large company I worked for, it was a combination of 10 years of continuous employment plus your age. If it equaled 50 (or maybe 55, the memory is a bit fuzzy on that one), you could retire with full retirement benefits (one particular benefit was very nice and lasted until you or your spouse, if you had one, died, whichever came later). I'm guessing it's a similar situation here. Best of luck to him in his future endeavors!

Not retired if he's still working

From a public perspective Mark appears to have done a great job at DAK. It will be interesting to see who his replacement is.
