- July 18 (Reuters) - Epcot, the second most
popular park at Walt Disney World in Florida, reopened for business
on Thursday after a power outage caused by an electrical fire forced
closure of the park the day before
The electrical fire occurred in a transformer in a backstage area
within the park early Wednesday morning, said Disney spokeswoman
Diane Ledder. No one was injured, and the fire appeared to be an
accident, she said.
The resulting power outage affected the entire park, as well as the
nearby Disney Beach Club resort and the air-conditioning system at
the Disney Beach Club Villas, a 246-unit time share community that
opened in July.
Power was restored to all areas later in the day, and Epcot reopened
for business as usual on Thursday, Ledder said.
The closure is the first for an individual park at Disney World,
which also includes three other parks, the Magic Kingdom, Disney-MGM
Studios and Disney's Animal Kingdom. The other three parks were not
affected.
In Walt Disney World history, the entire complex of parks has been
closed only twice -- once in 1999 during Hurricane Floyd, and last
year on Sept. 11.
