February 3 2001: Pop Century Details

A new hotel to be built at Walt Disney World Resort will send guests on a trip through American popular culture with larger-than-life icons that recall the way we lived and played and communicated during each decade of the 20th century.

Disney's Pop Century Resort will have 5,760 rooms spread across 20 buildings. It will be built in two phases, with the first phase of 2,880 rooms scheduled to open in winter 2001/2002.

Each pair of buildings in the resort will be themed to a different decade, from the 1900s to the 1990s. Cultural touchstones from each era -- a giant jukebox for the 1950s and a huge yo-yo for the 1960s, for instance -- will mark the entrances. Silhouettes illustrating dances of the decade adorn the front of each building, and the roofs are lined with catch-phrases of the time.

The resort will be located in the northeast quadrant of Osceola Parkway and Victory Way, just south of Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort.

Disney's Pop Century Resort will join the 5,760 rooms of Disney’s All-Star Resorts in offering Walt Disney World guests accommodations in the value category, currently priced from $74-$104 per room, per night.

"We are excited to add to the success of our All-Star Resorts," said Al Weiss, president of Walt Disney World Resort. "Guests have really responded to the whimsical architecture and fun atmosphere of the All-Star, and they really appreciate all the extras that come with staying at a Disney resort."

Disney resort guests enjoy amenities such as complimentary transportation throughout property and early entrance to Disney theme parks on select days.

"From a business perspective," Weiss added, "this new resort is consistent with our ongoing strategy of developing assets which provide both increased cash flow and total value of our property."

Together with Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, opening in spring 2001, Disney's Pop Century Resort when completed will bring the total number of guest rooms at Walt Disney World Resort to more than 33,000. A total of 19 resorts with more than 27,000 rooms will be Walt Disney World owned and operated. Currently, Disney owned and operated guest rooms total more than 20,000 in 17 resorts.

17 December 1999: Official Confirmation from Disney of Value Resort

Guests Will Travel Through Time at Walt Disney World's New Value Resort

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- A new hotel to be built at Walt Disney World Resort will send guests on a trip through American popular culture with larger-than-life icons that recall the way we lived, played and communicated during each decade of the 20th century. The 5,760-room resort will consist of 20 buildings that will be built in two phases, with the first phase of 2,880 rooms scheduled to open in 2002. Each pair of buildings in the resort will be themed to a different decade, from the 1900s to the 1990s. Cultural touchstones from each era will mark the entrances. The resort, currently unnamed, will join the 5,760 rooms of Disney's All-Star Resorts in offering Walt Disney World guests accommodations in the value category, currently priced from $74-$104 per room, per night.

8 December 1999: New 6000 room resort confirmed!

Published in The Orlando Sentinel on Dec 8, 1999.

Walt Disney World is moving ahead with plans to develop one of its largest-ever resorts.

Disney executives confirmed Tuesday that the company would develop a 5,760-room economy-style resort spread across 20 buildings near Disney-MGM Studios.

The resort, northeast of Osceola Parkway and Victory Way and south of Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort, will depict different stages of American popular culture in the 20th century.

The project will be built in two phases, with the first phase of 2,880 rooms opening in 2002. Work crews have begun clearing land.

The resort will be similar in scale and price range to Disney's popular All-Star Resorts, which offer rooms in the $74-to-$104 range. The All-Star Resorts, completed earlier this year, have movie, sports and music themes.

"We are excited to add to the success of our All-Star Resorts," Walt Disney World President Al Weiss said in a statement. "Guests have really responded to the whimsical architecture and fun atmosphere of the All-Star, and they really appreciate all the extras that come with staying at a Disney resort."

The resort will be Disney's 19th, bringing the total number of hotel rooms at Walt Disney World to more than 33,000. The hotels enjoy occupancy rates in the 90 percent range, almost 20 percentage points higher than the average for other Orlando-area hotels.

The 20 four-story buildings will be grouped in pairs, each themed to a different decade, from the 1900s to the 1990s. Cultural symbols from each era, such as a giant jukebox for the 1950s and a huge yo-yo for the 1960s, will mark the entrances. The walls of each building will be adorned with silhouettes illustrating popular dances from each decade.

The as-yet unnamed resort also will have two main entrances, each with its own food court.

18 November 1999: New super resort near Disney MGM Studios?

The Orlando Sentinel is reporting Walt Disney World is looking to build a resort with up to 6,000 rooms near Disney MGM-Studios.  Similar to the All Star Resorts, the new resort would be comprised of 3 economy hotels.
