16 November 2004: Living Seas Nemo enhancements
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Imagine Crush, the sea turtle from
"Finding Nemo," stopping mid-stream, turning to the audience from
his movie-screen undersea environment and saying, "Hey you -- dude
in the green-striped shirt -- what's that on your head?" Walt Disney
Imagineers have created precisely this kind of magical interaction
in "Turtle Talk With Crush" at Epcot.
The breakthrough experience gives Walt Disney World guests the
chance to engage in live, unrehearsed conversations with the
animated sea turtle from the Disney presentation of Pixar's "Finding
Nemo." From his digital world under the sea, Crush chats, plays and
jokes with guests in a unique, personalized way. The 152-year-old
turtle recognizes guests and asks them questions about themselves
and the human world in the first-of-its-kind live, real-time
animated show.
Located in The Living Seas pavilion at Epcot, "Turtle Talk With
Crush" is the latest milestone in Disney's legacy of bringing
characters to life in new and incredible ways. It represents
Imagineering's latest foray into real-time animation. Using digital
projection and sophisticated, voice-activated animation, Imagineers
created a new way for Disney guests to talk with this
personality-rich character.
The new show began as a prototype in the Research and Development
labs of Walt Disney Imagineering in California three years ago. The
challenge was to give guests a way to personally interact with Crush
from his animated, undersea world.
"The Imagineering team exceeded our wildest hopes, and "Turtle Talk
With Crush" is a magical experience that delights children and
adults of all ages," said Kathy Mangum, executive show producer and
vice president of Walt Disney Imagineering. "You never know what he
is going to say, and our guests will be enchanted and amazed."
"Turtle Talk With Crush" opens the door to a new realm of theme park
experiences -- one in which Disney guests and their favorite
animated characters can talk, joke and play together in a way that
only Disney can create.
Also new at The Living Seas: Bruce's Shark World.
Bruce, another of the stars from "Finding Nemo" (the one with the
memorably toothy countenance), is featured in an interactive area
that provides guests with photo opportunities plus colorful graphics
full of fun facts about sharks.
Bruce's Shark World and "Turtle Talk With Crush" are included with
Epcot admission and are presented during Future World operating
hours.
27 September 2004: Coral Reef Closed Thru
10/3
Due to the impact of Hurricane Jeanne, the Coral
Reef restaurant will not be operating until Sunday, October 3.
The Living Seas pavilion and all dive programs (including Dolphins
in Depth, Aquatour, and Dive Quest) will be operating as normal
beginning on Monday.

30 August 2004: American Heritage Gallery opening
early September
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Art lovers will have a
new reason to visit Epcot beginning in September when the Walt
Disney World theme park opens its sixth gallery, American Heritage
Gallery, with an inaugural exhibition exploring the connection
between historical African art objects and their influence and
significance as interpreted by contemporary African-American
artists. The new gallery will be located in the American Adventure
pavilion in World Showcase.
"Echoes of Africa" will feature important pieces from the Walt
Disney-Tishman African Art Collection, considered to be one of the
most significant and respected collections of African art in private
hands. The collection was amassed over twenty years and spans the
entire region of Africa, focusing primarily on Western Africa.
During the three-year run of the exhibit, 15 to 20 pieces from the
Walt Disney-Tishman African Art Collection will be on display at any
one time, side by side with the works of approximately one dozen
contemporary artists.
The Disney-Tishman African Art Collection has played a vital role in
the world's understanding of African culture. The study of the
objects contributed to some anthropological breakthroughs. Had this
collection not been preserved and studied, experts say, some of our
understanding of African culture would have been lost to history.
The collection was originally assembled by Paul and Ruth Tishman.
The Walt Disney Company acquired the collection from the Tishmans in
1984. The collection has been included in world-class exhibitions
since it was acquired by the Walt Disney Company. Objects from the
collection are currently on exhibition at numerous museums around
the world, including the Louvre, Smithsonian, Monastery of Our Lady
of Prado (Valladolid, Spain) and the Museum for African Art, New
York.
Renowned author and educator Dr. Lizzetta LeFalle-Collins will serve
as guest curator for the exhibit. Dr. LeFalle-Collins is a noted
scholar of African-American art and has curated exhibitions for the
Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco, the American
Federation of the Arts in New York, the California African-American
Museum in Los Angeles, and the 22nd International Bienal Exhibition
in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
As the sixth World Showcase gallery, the American Heritage Gallery
joins galleries in the Mexico, Norway, China, Japan and Morocco
pavilions. Entry to all of the galleries is included with Epcot
admission.

"Each year, we host the largest, longest wine fest in the world, and
as demand for our food and wine events increased, we knew it was
time to grow even more for our guests," said Epcot Vice President

nightly Eat to the Beat! concert series will feature an even more
varied lineup this year, including classic rock, oldies and country
performers.
"The festival is our opportunity to showcase not only all the
culinary and wine-related talent at Walt Disney World Resort, but
also to introduce great celebrity chefs and wine connoisseurs in the
industry," said Nora Carey, festival manager. "We strive to provide
various levels of experiences that reflect the diverse interests of
our guests, from simple marketplace tastings and seminars to
extravagant dinners."
More than 100 wineries offer tastings, and guests can sample the

England Fair, and the return of favorites including Australia,

8 March 2004: Spaceship Earth
changes
Thanks to ChrisH for this report:
"The Global Neighborhood is gone from the end of
Spaceship Earth at Epcot. At the bottom of the ride, the sign for it
is still there, but the recording that tells you to go visit it has
been removed. Then walking off the ride and down the ramp, there are
big blue construction walls that go around most of the center of the
room, leaving space to walk to the exits on each side of the room. All
of the exhibits in the walls (like the StoryTeller Phone) are also
gone and the windows are boarded up. Signs for the Global Neighborhood
are still up outside, but I can't imagine that will be for long."
4 March 2004:

the completed Guide at all Epcot Guest Relations locations, Mexico
Kidcot, Canada Kidcot or the World Traveler Shop at International
Gateway for a special prize--an 8 ½" x 11" character poster perfect
for including in a scrapbook. Posters are redeemed one-for-one meaning
one poster per Guide. Goofy's Epcot Guide contains all the necessary
information for completing the activity and claiming the special
poster.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- After eight years and
millions of delectable food and wine samplings, the month-long Epcot

beginning Oct. 1, 2004.
In recent years, the popular festival has grown dramatically,
attracting a diverse audience of wine connoisseurs and gourmands, as
well as droves of wine "amateurs" eager to boost their wine IQs. In
addition, the wine fest's Eat to the Beat! nightly concerts, with acts
that that have included Sister Sledge and Three Dog Night, have drawn
additional crowds since their 2002 festival debut.
"Each year, we host the largest, longest wine fest in the world, and
as demand for our food and wine events increased, we knew it was time
to grow even more for our guests," said Epcot vice president Brad Rex.
"We're happy to announce the festival will expand by 15 additional
days and run from Oct. 1 through Nov. 14, 2004."
During the 2003 event, festival chefs served up appetizer-sized
tastings of international foods at the rate of nearly 28,000 per day.
More than 125 celebrity and Disney chefs conducted culinary
demonstrations or hosted special dinner- and tasting-events. And, at
least 840 wine and beer seminars delivered complimentary tastings to
festival guests.
10 February 2004: Test Track

23 January 2003: AT&T pulling
sponsorship from Spaceship Earth
This item circulated amongst AT&T employees,
indicates sponsorship is being heavily cut at all Disney parks.
AT&T ENDS SPONSORSHIPS AT DISNEY PARKS – As part of
a continuous evaluation of our sponsorship activities, AT&T has
decided not to renew our sponsorships of Spaceship Earth at Walt
Disney World (Florida) and Innoventions at Disneyland (California).
AT&T made this decision as part of its ongoing efforts to make the
best possible use of our sponsorship dollars and ensure the best
possible match with our business priorities. AT&T's sponsorship of
Spaceship Earth at EPCOT Center began 20 years ago during the days of
the Bell System. While we have evolved our partnership with the Walt
Disney Company over the years, the Spaceship Earth and Innoventions
sponsorships no longer meet the needs of the business. However, we
look forward to continuing other marketing and promotional involvement
with the Disney Company. Concurrent with the end of the sponsorships,
effective Jan. 1, employees no longer have access to discounted Disney
tickets or to the hospitality areas associated with these two
attractions

2 October 2002: Spain Pavilion
update
It seems that the Spain Pavilion is only to be part
of the Food and Wine Festival, and not a full blown pavilion at this
time. Although of course the presence at the festival may be an
indicator of a plan for a permanent pavilion at some later stage.
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Andalucia, a colorful
corner of Spain known for its superb sherries, olive oils and
gastronomic delights, earns the spotlight with a new exhibit at the
seventh annual Epcot International Food and Wine Festival Oct. 19-Nov.
17.
The 3,500-square-foot “Discover Andalucia, Spain”
experience, located in World Showcase near the Germany pavilion,
brings the region of Andalucia to life with a small, terraced
olive-tree exhibit, weathered stucco buildings and courtyard, flamenco
dancers and an olive oil tour. The free-flowing tour concludes with a
complimentary sherry tasting.
Andalucia, a region in the southwest of Spain
bordered on the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, is the largest
sherry producer in the world and is famous for its tapas and light
cuisine created with the area’s enduring olive oils.
The Andalucia, Spain experience, created in
participation with the economic development branch of the Andalusian
government, includes:
- An olive oil tour in buildings reminiscent of
those found throughout Andalucia. It features the history of the
region’s olive oil production, the agriculture at the core of
cultivation and production, a re-creation of a traditional olive oil
press and a tasting of the final product with information about
olive oil’s health benefits.
- A sherry tour that demonstrates the traditional
solera cask aging system and a tasting of sherry served to guests by
an authentic veneciador.
- Craftsmen and artisans showcasing crafted wares
and traditional products.
- A traditional Andalusian courtyard with fountain
and arches.
- A tapas bar with gazpacho and other
appetizer-sized portions, plus wine and sherries of the region.
- Authentic flamenco performances throughout the
day.
The Epcot International Food and Wine Festival
around the World Showcase Lagoon features more than 20 food and wine
marketplaces, free wine-tasting seminars and culinary demonstrations,
a specialty beer garden and the new “Eat to the Beat” Concert Series
with daily performances by popular entertainers. In addition to the 11
World Showcase countries, festival marketplaces will serve up
samplings from South Africa, Greece, Chile and other countries and
regions.

26 September 2002: New Epcot
pavilion?
This seems to have come out of nowhere this morning
(thanks to Stefan). There is no news of this via the usual WDW news
sources at this time, so treat it is as unconfirmed for the moment.
Madrid, Sep 25, 2002 (EFE via COMTEX) -- EPCOT
Center, one of the four Walt Disney World amusement parks in Orlando,
Florida, will open a Spanish pavilion.
The project was presented in Madrid on Wednesday by
officials from the Spanish Economy and Treasury Ministry and The Walt
Disney Company Iberia.
The new pavilion will "spread the image of the Spain
of today in the United States, providing insight into its traditions,
culture and products, and improving its position in the world,"
ministry officials said.
It is a "good opportunity for Spanish companies and
products to strengthen their presence in the United States, taking
advantage of the exposure offered by EPCOT," they noted.
EPCOT Center is divided into two sections - Future
World, which deals with health, transportation and environmental
issues; and World Showcase, which deals with the culture, food,
entertainment and products of the 11 countries represented at the
park.
The countries include Germany, France, the United
Kingdom, Italy, Norway, China, Japan, the United States, Canada,
Mexico and Morocco.
26 September 2002: Project
Gemini Update
Project Gemini now has the backing of Michael Eisner
and Paul Pressler, and budgets have been assigned, they are healthy.
The concept of the project is a mass rebranding of Epcot, to inject
the excitement back that the park once had. The much rumored splitting
of the park into 2 separate gates appears to be unlikely at this
stage. The grand reopening of the park is set to be December 2006,
however parts of the new project will open before that time.
Two signature attractions for the new Epcot are a
Soarin' Over attraction from DCA, and another ETicket attraction
called "Time Racers".
20 September 2002:
Breakfast at Norway
The new Princess Storybook Breakfast at Norway,
which was running under a test phase, is now a permanent offering.
18 September 2002: Project
Gemini
The budget that was assigned to
planning the 5th gate at WDW, has no been diverted to rescuing Epcot
from an attendance slide. Rehabs and new attractions are on the cards.
The project has the rather appropriate name of "Project Gemini".

4:30, 5:45, 7:10 and 8:15 p.m.
SHOCKWAVE will treat Walt Disney World guests to an energetic
exhibition of motion and pageantry. The show's themes of pop culture
and breaking new boundaries are delivered with an explosion of brass
and percussion -- plus a five-piece saxophone section.
“We are excited that our popular summer series is bringing Epcot
guests another Broadway-caliber performance,” said Epcot vice
president Brad Rex. “SHOCKWAVE is certain to entertain guests of all
ages.”
Four musical sets based on rock tunes, contemporary jazz and world
music popularized by legendary artists will immerse guests in the
SHOCKWAVE experience. Numbers featured are:
“Bohemian Rhapsody” - by Queen
“First Circle” - by Pat Metheny
“God Bless the Child” - by Billie Holiday
“Channel One Suite” - by Stan Kenton
Jim Mason, the show’s creator,
said guests should expect a high-energy experience that expands beyond
the stage. The 40 performers will not only be displaying musical
talent but also interpreting the various musical scenes through
movement on and off the stage. The movement is as important to this
show as the music.
“It was time to push away the chairs and let the musicians be the
actors,” Mason said.
Following its world premiere at Epcot this summer, SHOCKWAVE will tour
cities around the country.
