Making Music Magic: Disney’s 100 Years of Magic a Musical Celebration

General 100 Years of Magic News and Updates

March 20 2003: One Man's Dream and parades set to continue

The 100 Years of Magic celebration officially ended on Feb. 28, but by popular demand several of the entertainment elements created for the tribute to company founder Walt Disney are being held over -- including "Walt Disney: One Man's Dream" at Disney-MGM Studios.

"Walt Disney: One Man's Dream" is an attraction showcasing memorabilia from the Walt Disney Archives that never before have been available to the public. The attraction includes a short film of Walt Disney's life that explores the extraordinary hardships he overcame to achieve what he did in his lifetime.

Other elements of the celebration that will continue daily after Feb. 28:

  • "Disney Stars and Motor Cars" -- a daily parade of outrageously customized cars loaded with favorite characters at Disney-MGM Studios.
  • "Share a Dream Come True," a specially created Magic Kingdom parade featuring larger-than-life snow globes that capture the magic and charm of Disney characters from a child's point of view.
  • "Mickey's Jammin' Jungle" -- the first true parade created for Disney's Animal Kingdom, the newest Walt Disney World theme park.

September 20 2002: Celebration Extended

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The Walt Disney World 100 Years of Magic celebration is too good to end -- so it won’t. The party that kicked off Oct. 1, 2001, has been extended to Feb. 28, 2003, with the biggest lineup of sparkling new live entertainment ever throughout the four Walt Disney World theme parks. There also are special events and new attractions galore.

The 100 Years of Magic celebration marks the 100th anniversary of Walt Disney’s birth on Dec. 5, 1901.

“100 Years of Magic has been such a hit with guests, we are thrilled to extend the celebration, allowing even more guests to experience it,” said Walt Disney World President Al Weiss.

Paying homage to the extraordinary show-business contributions of Walt Disney, 100 Years of Magic is centered at Disney-MGM Studios. Anchoring the park is The Sorcerer’s Hat, a 122-foot-tall icon celebrating Disney magic and entertainment wizardry, and “Walt Disney: One Man’s Dream,” an attraction showcasing memorabilia from the Walt Disney Archives that never before have been available to the public.

Major live entertainment spectacles involving hundreds of performers are featured at all four Walt Disney World parks:

  • Disney-MGM Studios guests are treated to “Disney Stars and Motor Cars” -- a daily parade of outrageously customized cars loaded with favorite characters. Also, young guests enjoy a brand new live show featuring their favorite TV friends from “Playhouse Disney.”
  • Larger-than-life snow globes capture the magic and charm of Disney characters from a child’s point of view in “Share a Dream Come True,” a specially created Magic Kingdom parade. There’s also “Cinderella’s Surprise Celebration,” a forecourt stage show that brings guests up close and personal with Disney characters like never before.
  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom is alive with color and pageantry during presentations of “Mickey’s Jammin’ Jungle” -- the first true Disney parade created for the newest Walt Disney World theme park.
  • New characters called Dream Seekers and a colorful float called the Dream Catcher are part of the makeover that transforms the hugely popular Epcot procession “Tapestry of Nations” into “Tapestry of Dreams.”

All four theme parks feature the fascinating stories behind the Disney magic at computerized kiosks. Guests can play their way through a treasure trove of information that shows the heritage behind the family-entertainment fun of today’s Disney parks.

Even special merchandise created for the 100 Years of Magic celebration carries on the Disney legacy of innovation. Disney’s Magical Moments pins, available for purchase by guests, offers up a mini-light show -- like magic -- at surprise moments, interacting with live entertainment, attractions and interactive kiosks.

The celebration also features other new theme park attractions and shows, uniquely themed resorts and shopping experiences, including:

  • TriceraTop Spin and Primeval Whirl in Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
  • “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire-Play It!” in Disney-MGM Studios.
  • The Magic Carpets of Aladdin in the Magic Kingdom.
  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, and new Disney Vacation Club villas at Disney’s Beach Club Resort and Disney’s Wilderness Lodge.
  • New Downtown Disney shopping adventures at Once Upon a Toy.

October 2 2001

Walt Disney World Resort turned 30 Monday -- and launched its 100 Years of Magic celebration -- in ceremonies marked by song, bursts of confetti, a train full of colorful Disney characters and an old-fashioned railroad station done up in decorations of red, white and blue.

“Since our opening 30 years ago today,” said Walt Disney World President Al Weiss in front of the Magic Kingdom, “one theme park has grown to four. Two hotels have become 18. We’ve added three water parks, a sports complex, an entertainment district.”

“Some things, however, have never changed. Walt Disney’s vision for his theme parks, for instance, guides us still today.”

“During 100 Years of Magic we will celebrate not only Walt but all things Disney.”

Monday’s park guests were treated to performances by a Disney brass band and a barbershop quartet, appearances by everyone from Mickey Mouse to Tigger, the unveiling of a 100 Years of Magic ten-foot topiary and the singing of classic Disney songs.

Under blue skies, the celebration was joined by 50 Disney characters who stepped off the Walt Disney World Railroad to the applause of guests, including 30-year cast members who were special invitees.

On now until Dec. 31, 2002, Disney’s 100 Years of Magic celebration honors the 100th anniversary of the birth of Walt Disney (Dec. 5, 1901). In tribute to Walt’s legacy of innovation, imagination and family entertainment, Disney World is unwrapping exciting new parades in all four parks, a 122-foot-tall Sorcerer’s Hat icon anchoring Disney-MGM Studios and “Walt Disney: One Man’s Dream,” a walk-through attraction showcasing memorabilia from the Disney archives -- many items never before seen in public.

All told, the new entertainment spectacles involve more than 400 performers, the largest entertainment rollout in the 30-year history of Walt Disney World Resort.

Weiss called 100 Years of Magic “our greatest celebration yet…celebrating Walt Disney and all the ideas and plans that his imagination continues to inspire.”

To mark the 100 Years of Magic celebration, Disney World announced plans Monday for a special Florida resident annual pass – with 100 bonus days for free. To go on sale later in October, the pass will cost $289 for adults and $246 for kids aged 3-9.

September 20 2001: Official Confirmation of the Start Date and Delayed Press Events

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla.—The 100 Years of Magic celebration, a 15-month salute to the 100th birthday and creative legacy of Walt Disney, will begin for Walt Disney World Resort guests on Oct. 1, 2001, as planned. We believe this is the right thing to do since guests will arrive that day expecting to see our many new parades and attractions; we owe it to them to have the celebration under way.

Out of respect for recent events in the United States, we regretfully must cancel the 100 Years of Magic media event that had been scheduled for Oct. 1-3, 2001, though we hope to share the celebration with the media at a more appropriate time. Depending on circumstances, we are considering a media event around Dec. 5, the actual centennial of Walt Disney's birth.

Walt Disney World is a special place where people come to set aside the worries of the world and create lifetime memories with their friends and families. During times of trouble, we believe it is more important than ever to provide this kind of magical and carefree setting for our guests.

September 20 2001: Cast Preview of the new "Share A Dream Come True" Parade at the Magic Kingdom

This report into us from Steve D.

"There was a special viewing for Cast Members at 10:15pm yesterday evening...This of course is the new DAY parade which will entertain guests at 3pm Daily beginning officially on October 1st...with soft openings before then. The MK was filled with CM's for the event it seems.

- Mickey's Float begins the parade. The snow globe itself is actually an exact replica of one you can find in all of the WDW Retail locations that feature snow globes. Mickey has speaking roles in the parade as well...just as he did in previous parades. The snow inside the globes looks wonderful according to my
friend. Right behind his float come walking down main street are Broomsticks ala Sorcerer's Apprentice complete with buckets filled with "water" (Blue, glittery confetti). Other floats featured Aladdin...In Aladdin's Snowglobe, of which the Genii is on top....we see Aladdin in the globe sitting on his Magic
Carpet..which is FLOATING in the snow globe..just like magic carpets should, a beautiful piece from what I understand. A Villain's snowglobe is also part of the procession. Ursela, The Evil Queen and Maleficent among others all play rolls in this float. I believe there is also a "Magic Mirror" complete with smoke as part of the float as well. The parade also features Pinocchio and Beauty and the Beast Floats. I believe The Little Mermaid is also featured as well. The Castle in The Clouds float from what I hear is very impressive.. Cinderella's Castle inside the globe. This float finishes out the parade....All of the characters are sprinkled throughout the parade as well.

The opening of the parade features an introduction by none other then JULIE ANDREWS who reprises her role as Mary Poppins for a few seconds during the intro...The soundtrack from what I hear also is very moving..and upbeat. The parade brought my friend to tears. I think we may have a winner on our hands.
The Cast Preview was held at night and it looked good....We will see how it works in the daytime...I was very happy to hear the snowglobes look good on Main Street. The parade is fully choreographed with SHOW STOPS just as in the last parade. "
