First look at the new Luminous mini-barges deployed in World Showcase lagoon

Luminous barges deployed in show configuration

Crews working on EPCOT's new nighttime spectacular Luminous have begun testing the new mini-barges in World Showcase lagoon.

These new show platforms are unique in that they are brought out into the lagoon daily, docked inside each of the six large barges. Once the large bargees are anchored, the four mini-barges are pulled out of each large barge by boat and docked into position on the recently installed pilings in the lagoon.

At least 24 of these mini-barges will be deployed around World Showcase lagoon, allowing show designers to position effects in a wide area across the water and quite close to guests watching from the promenade. Luminous will have more than 30 floating platforms to deliver fireworks, lighting, and fountains.

Today's testing also shows where these mini-barges will be docked. We can see from the photo below that the mini-barges radiate out from the large barge.

Three of the mini-barges are arranged in a straight line radiating out from the back of the large barge. They are tethered together with a rope to hold them in position and an umbilical cord, presumably supplying power and data signals from the main barge.

The fourth mini-barge is positioned off to the side, in a position that will be between two of the large barges.

The same pattern will then be repeated for the remaining main barges and their group of 4 mini-barges.

When viewed from overhead, the barge arrangement is like spokes of a wheel emerging from a central point.

Luminous very much outdoes ROE in the final here's a video for reference:

Even without those last boomers... They were just noise makers but I do think The finale of Luminous easily out fire powers finale of Reflections of Earth. ROE had like 12 mortars in its grand finale. I don't even know how many luminous has. Yes. This was unexpected but I'm glad to have it.

Agreed. The moment between the pyro hearts, through the phrase "the great symphony of us", to the grand finale gives me chills every time I see it. Gorgeous message and storytelling.

If I had to guess, they're loading the center barge up (not the tower piece, the area around it) with pyro now since most of the new stuff seems to launching from it. Maybe they feel pretty good about how it's functioning to add the full pyro load to it now.

Agreed. They're kind of there but there needs to be more and they need to be a lot louder. One of my main criticisms with Harmonious is that i feel like it ended with a whimper instead of a bang. Luminous halfway fixes this problem but i would love to see the big crackles return!

It does not come from the lift used for the spiral/blossom effect, but it does come from the same base barge it sits on top of. Basically that barge in the very center.

It needs those loud popping fireworks all over the place at the very end (like they used in illuminations)

Are we sure these are changes that were going to be included from day one?

With both Harmonious and Enchantment, Disney made sure to say when they premiered that they were still waiting on pyro to come in for the show. I think it speaks to Tucker coming in and being able to make a show that stood alone as having great pyro, with possibly some of the effects not yet in place. I am curious, does the spiral effect that happens in the finale also hold the new pyro for the final burst?

He filmed those shots months ago, the extra pyro was just added a couple of days ago so it doesn't include them.

I needed some time to completely warm up to the show, but this video definitely pulled me across the line. I love it now. Can't wait to see it in person. I thought the pyro looked different and much better in this vide (design wise) than I've seen in others so far. Maybe someone more in the know can tell me if this video includes the extra pyro people on here have been talking about? What a show. Also, these barges are perfect for Epcot imo. Also also, never noticed the torches and country lights go on with each welcome before.

I love the new pyro that shoots out at the end of the Friendship segment and the sparklers at the beginning of the Love section is a really nice touch
